Pre Opp Diet
Does anyine know how common it is for your liver to be too big for surgery? I have to follow a low carb low fat diet for 3 weeks prior to surgery. I am in week 3 and i have lost 16 pounds, I have had a little carbs and healthy fat (avacado, nuts) each day so I'm really anxious that my liver hasn't shrunk enough for surgery. Is it more about the weight you have lost before surgery or the food you eat?
Thanks for any thougts you might have:)

For my pre-op I was on a 2 week clear liquid diet. It seems to be pretty common and I think most of us had a liquid diet.
I don't think it's a common thing, although it does happen. No one is a text book patient. One of the liver's functions is to break down fats ingested by the body and it also helps convert calories to usable sugar for the body. That's why the doctor encourages a low fat/ pre op diet. (Even healthy fats are still being broken down by the liver, so be careful) One that will reduce the livers size so that you have less of a chance of it being nicked by one of the surgical instruments. Mindset being the less it has to work, the smaller it's size, in a nutshell.
Hope that helps a little. Read about the livers function on a web search, maybe it'll help you understand more.
My answer would have to be, it's about the food you eat.
Hopefully others have some insight on this as well.

In 5 years on OH, I have read of just one person who was turned away from surgery because of this.
Many people don't even do pre-op diets- their docs don't require them
