liver shrinking diet
Yes! Follow your surgeon's instructions. Here's what mine was:
Clear liquids only :
Clear soups/broths
Sugar free jell-o
Sugar free popsicles
Any sugar free/non carbonated drinks (crystal light)
Next to quitting smoking, this was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. The first 3 days I felt physically sick- light headed/nauseated. I believe it was my body going through sugar and carb withdrawl. After the 3rd day I felt good and the popsicles and jell-o were my life savers. I never slipped up and lost 10 lbs. in 10 days. My surgeon said my liver looked great! Good luck! YOU CAN DO THIS!

I'd ask your doc why you are even DOING a liquid diet pre op. Oh, I get the low carb diet pre op and I'm all for it, but there are no peer reviewed studies showing a low carb LIQUID diet is superior to a low carb SOLID food diet. All a liquid diet does is make the person drinking it miserable. ;o)
If you research it you'll find that 1-2 weeks of low carb diets don't actually shrink your liver but they do absorb the slimy slippery glycogen from the surface of your liver making surgery easier to do for your surgeon. Easier for him means safer for you. To actually start shrinking your liver you would have to do low carb for an absolute minimum of 6 weeks, but more likely several months.
Soooo, I'd ask why you have to do liquids when there isn't a bit of science out there showing it is superior to a low carb solid food diet.

Hi,
My doctor said I could have a protein shake for breakfast, a protein lunch ( like baked chicken, fish or turkey and a veggie, not a starch veggie) and a protein dinner, and another protein shake for a snack. I've been eating like this for about a week, I'm not hungry, but I don't think I've lost much weight. Oh yea, I am suppose to drink 64 oz of fluid a day. Good luck to you....
