I hope to have lap band surgery soon and my dietician gave a list of vitamins i'm supposed to take after surgery.  This list is also the same for other bariatric surgerys.  With the band all vitamins are being absorbed and with some other bariatric surgeries there is less absorbtion.  Does anyone have any recomendations on chewable vitamins and mineral supplements? Any input will greatly be appreciated.  I have spent much time researching vitamins and mineral supplements and I was wondering what has worked for everyone.

The only vitamins my Dr said I need to take is either 2 children's chewable or one adult chewable a day. I use the centrum chewable's. I also take one calcium citrate a day because I rarely drink milk anymore. I use the petites.
Good luck.

The only supplements I have to take are a Multivitamin, Not chewable, they go down just fine, I also take 4 chewable calcium, need 1000mg a day.  Check with your nutritionist, we don't need the same supplements as bypass.  Good luck.

Bariatric Advantage makes a good line of chewables.  DO NOT get the wild cherry flavored calcium though.. YUK.

I use Twin Lab chewable calcium wafers.   I have to take more of them to get to 1500 but they are not as bitter as the Bariatric advantage.

I take 2 children chewable vitamins daily - I bought t a huge bottle from BJ's.

I also take chewable  iron from Bariatric advantage ( my choice) , and Biotin ( for hair , skin and nails).

The usual instructions both from docs and from Allergan are that we should take one multi-vit a day. Many of us take more because of things like our age (post-menopausal women often take calcium for exampel) but that is not band-related.

I do find it slightly concerning (but I am not a doc so obviously listen to the docs not me!!!) when people are given "all surgery" type supplement instructions - it is possible to over-dose on vits etc.!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Gummies and childrens vitamins are not appropriate for adult bariatric patients.

Centrum makes an ADULT chewable, comes in orange and berry.

The band got me to goal, the sleeve will keep me there.

Many are correct that necessary vitamins & supplements are different for Band patients compared to Bypass and other WLS patients. My doc recommended a daily chewable multivitamin (Flintstones Complete or Centrum) and Calcium as well as Vit. D (my levels were low). I purchased GNC B-well chewables and they're pretty good. They come in Vanilla and Caramel flavors.

Supplimentation should always be based on your specific needs - your doctor/nut should have all of your bloods drawn at least once a year and ajust according to what your labs tell them. Unfortunatly they may not be up to date on current nutritional findings so you may have to adjust on your own as you feel its needed.

Although you will not malabsorb vit/minerals you're eating a lot less and most likely will not be able to get everything you need from the little food you eat (especially where raw veggies and fruits are classic problem foods with the band).

IMO and this is aggreed on by most, Everyone should be taking:
1 adult multi vitamin (this may help http://wlsvitagarten.com/2011/01/10/adult-gummy-vitamins/#more-2213)
1000-1500 mg calcium citrate

Then based on your blood work:
B12 (I was deficient pre banding)
D3 (I was defiecient 2 years after banding)
Iron (I was always low)
and others depending on your test results A, E, Zinc, B6, etc.

Good luck!

You can buy liquid vitamins. Children's ones are not enough for adults. also you shouldn't take Multi & Calcium together
