OT - How do you know when an incision is infected?
VSG on 02/09/12
I had a mole removed last week and yesterday, it was all red above the incision. Today it's red above and below the incision. I have stitches and it is still very sore to the touch, although it appears to be healing well. It's not oozing anything. But it's red, hot and sore to the touch.
I have stitches. The office is closed today. Do you think I can wait to call until tomorrow or do you think I should call the emergency number?

Red and Hot in addition to oozing, funky smelling would be a clear indicator.
It can't hurt to call the MD on-call. Thats what they are paid the big bucks for. : )

elevated temperature, oozing from the site, swelling (above and beyond normal post surgical swelling) are signs of infection.. keep it clean and dry and i would buzz the office for peace of mind. probably not infected though.. Just my two cents as a nurse.. NOT A MEDICAL OPINION> :)
sorry have to preface that these days ...
Hope you feel better soon luv!!!
