Hi. I actually have had PCOS for several years now. I am actually hoping that the band and weight loss will help with my PCOS. Metformin is a very effective drug for treatment. I would just be sure to check your blood sugar levels regularly to make sure that you don't get too low. There is a forum on OH that deals with PCOS so you may get more support from there. I would do your own research to become familiar with the syndrome and all the reported ways to treat it. Some believe that a low carb diet is helpful, others feel that gluten free works. Low carb works for me and I haven't tried the gluten free approach. Good luck with your diagnosis and treatment. It is a bumpy road, but manageable.

I have PCOS and diabetes.  I used to take metformin, a.k.a. glucophage.  I know it is ok, according to my doc to take s/p RNY, but I don't know about lap band.  I was on the highest dosage-1000mg twice daily.  I had to taper up to it, because when they first put me on metformin, it gave me loose watery stools.  Not like constant diarrhea, but everytime I did have a BM it was watery.  I got up to my dosage and the gastro side effects resolved quickly.  I have to say it didn't do much for my PCOS.  I rarely had a period, which was fine by me.  But apparently not good for me, because now that I have been losing weight my hormones went crazy(which I know can happen with massive weight loss anyway, but...).  I was on my period since a week after RNY (3 months).  I was put on different meds to try to stop it, but nothing completely did until I had a D&C.  And you may be wondering, "Why is she telling me all this?"  I'll get to the point.  PCOS is sometimes associated with uterine polyps, which I had but they didn't cause symptoms until I started losing weight.  They found them by doing a biopsy.  These uterine polyps can cause cellular changes in the endometrium.  My biopsy was benign thankfully.  I did read it is not common for these type of uterine polyps to be cancerous.  And I am not trying to scare you in any way.  I just want to convey that I didn't realize what damage it was doing until 2 years after I was diagnosed.  I have had friends tell me that the metformin did help make their periods more regular, but it didn't for me.  I hope it helps you though.

Hi, I was diagnosed with diabetes in late 2007.  I am on Metformin and Glipizide.  Just recently I think my dosage is too much since the surgery (7/20).  I have a few episodes (shakey and sweaty) since my blood sugars get too low (59 last time it happened).  I know I have to get bloodwork done to check but my dosage is supposed to be 2x 1000mg Metformin and same with Glipizide.  I just elimianted the 2nd dose and my numbers have been very good.  I notice there's days when I take the Metformin and it gives me the runs too... bu it's not consistent.   Anyway, I have no idea hat pcos is but I don't have my periods anymore anyway, so... hope that helps you.  Good luck.

I have PCOS... it's a stinker... you can only get rid of it by losing weight but it makes you gain weight... just cruel!

I break my metformin in half and take the halves... i have never had any problems

I'm on metformin. I get mine at Publix (it's FREE!) and it's a round pill. I don't even have to cut it in half. I have gotten other manufacturers before and they're so big I have to crush them. Mine are 500mg size and go down without a problem.

Metformin supposedly makes weight loss easier. I wouldn't know yet because I hate taking meds and only recently started taking my met regularly even though my first script for it was like 3 years ago.
