Stuck in an exercise rut

To  help with being in a rut,  I look for and sign up to do various events; If I am "training" for an event,  that gives me a goal rather than just excerising.

Since WLS I have completed 9 1/2 marathons and several 100 mile bicycle rides.

It is difficult to excerise if I am not training for an event, because then otherwise;  it is too hot, too cold, too sunny, too dark, too what ever

I have to say that the best approach I have found for me in getting in extra activity, is to go for a walk or exercise with my Wii when ever I get the urge to eat when i know I do not need to do so. This works great to get in a lot of extra activity and help get the loss started again. Also, be sure you are getting in plenty of water and protein with your program. They all go hand and hand to get the lbs off and maintain good health.

When I get in a rut I go out and look for something "new" something that makes me step outside of my comfort zone.  Ex: Pilate's, kickboxing, spinning, water aerobics etc.

On days when the weather doesn't cooperate I like to pull out my wii fit and see what it has in store for me.  I always try to complete the next level or try a new sport for fun!

How about tennis? Skating? Bike riding? Hiking?

I find it's also more fun to exercise with a friend!  Misery loves company..

I find that a change of scenery does the trick for me.  I have made plans to look for places on the internet such as parks, resevoirs, malls etc., that I can use to make a change in my routine for working out and jogging.  Walking with a friend helps alot too.  Also involving other people in your workout makes you accountable to "show up" and it also makes for bonding time and support in your relationships.

My support group has made a once a month routine called "step it up" and we all get together and do some sort of activity that is new or different than last time.  It gives us a chance to try out new things and to enjoy each others company.

Support is so very important to our journey.  I believe support with your workouts is even more important.  If exercise was easy for us, we wouldn't have struggled with it in the first place.

Reward yourself in small ways for each workout you complete.  Add a dollar to your "reward" /"tips" jar and at the end of the month or quarter, get yourself something new.  Spend the money on you as an encouragement.  (New gym clothes or shoes make a great reward too!!!)

After weight loss, exercise comes so much easier than it was when lugging the extra 100# on my back. I don't have to find excuses anymore.

I rotate exercise depending on the weather and time of the year. I change from the gym to outdoors (e.g walking, jogging and biking in the park) during spring and summer and swimming is also on the menu for me to cool down during the heat. And as the weather does change. I go back to the gym and do those things indoors. Of course, when you hit those pesky plateaus I  change my routine just enough to get going again.  Keep the happy hormone (endorphins) going!!!

Yeah,  the thing about exercise is that you really have to "do" it.  We all know how inportant it is and what a difference it makes in our weight loss journey and maintenance.....but it is oh so easy to procrastinate about it.  There will always be a hundred excuses you can come up with to "not today" "tomorrow".  How do you keep going in the long haul?  You have to find somethingssss-more than one thing-that you really like doing.  Maybe not so much at first, but keep going-make yourself- and you may find what you thought you didn't like-you do.  Then you  have to switch it up to "confuse" your muscles.  They like variety or they stop working as hard and you won't see results.  Personally, I like to exercise at home.  I have the weights, the tapes, the treadmill, etc and I find I can work it into my schedule better than making a trip to the gym.  Others love the gym atmosphere-whatever works for you.

I love to exercise and love the way I feel when I am finished and love the way my body tones with exercise.  But alas, I have fallen out of my exercise routine and am having a very difficult time getting back into exercising.  As some others have posted, I enjoy doing the same types of exercises and when I was actively exercising I did cardio and weight training.  I have a treadmill and will go for a week or so walking on it and then I get tired one day from work and skipping one day won't hurt.  That second day is OK to skip as well.  Then I am back in the rut of NOT exercising.  I fight with myself to 'just do it' and sometimes it is a long battle.  I am getting ready to go on vacation soon and know I will be doing a lot of walking then....I hope it will be enough to get me started here at home again.  Sorry I can't give you any tips for getting out of your rut, but this thread has some really great tips on getting motivated and staying that way.  thank you!

YUP ! For me - as I'm sure for many of us - HATED the word exercise !! lol but it's a necessary evil...I started with walking and generally that is what I do - I tried running - didn't work - I may again but..... I am trying - I currently am signed up for a walk-a-thon that is 26.2 miles so I've been pushing myself to walk farther every day.... I did 7 miles today. I picked this particular walk - so I would have to challenge myself in that area - in addition our support group has been trying to get  active and create group outings that revolve around physical activity.

Also going to try riding a bike again...... I think we have to try and be creative and push ourselves.

I may be in a rut,but it is the best one ever.  I go to water exercise classes 4 times a week.  It works all muscles and is easy on my joints.
