What do is I have 5 different routines I have written down, some more cardio and some more weight training. About every month I get switch routines. Then after about 6 months I rewrite a new set of 5 routines.

most of my group exercises but some are having problems with it.
the group that is the most successful has personal trainers, they have structural training, such as gym classes with teachers, jazzercise, etc.  and they work out with friends.  that keeps them accountable and also, it's more fun when you're with someone else!!
the group that does NOT exercise seems to benefit from our support group when we try to motivate them to at least do gardening, walk in the mall, "shop", etc.

hope this helps!

oops, forgot:

I love to walk and hike.  I try to do water aerobics and yoga when I can.

Since I am able to walk more freely now (without the aches and pains) my major role of exercise is walking.  From what I have read walking is one of the best exercise one can do.  Although I do need to do upper body with weights and lunges for lower body walking is my favorite.

My arthritas Dr. had told me that by using weights and following a structured exercise plan it would lessen my risk of bone loss (osteoprosis).  Trying to find the time is another thing.  Sometimes when I am at work (I am on the phone and on a computer all day) I will stand on my toes and then a squat like I'm going to sit in my chair.

I've taken up bike riding with my fiance' and we are both on a bowling league which resumes in the fall.  The way I see it anything extra no matter if it is 5 minutes or 30 something is better than nothing.

Exercise is a comittment for life for WLS patients. My suggestion is to keep a pair of tennis shoes and socks in your car at all times. Stay prepared  to exercise. Try different machines in the gym or just pass by your local park  and walk rapidly for 25-45 minutes.
We must exercise to ontinue being healthy and keep the weight off.

I have experience this alot over the past 5 years.  I have a routine that I was doing when I went to the Gym, and my body got used to my workout and I stopped losing weight, I did not feel like I was toning.  I talked to some of the trainers at the YMCA and I was told that I needed to jazz things up and not to do the same routine everyday. Example is if I walk on the treadmill one day then ride the bike the next workout.  I even took up a Zumba class and loved it, had to give that up due to foot issues, so I am limited at this time on what I can do, so I am slipping back into a rut.

I am hoping by the end of the year I will be back into Zumba class, having foot surgery in 2 weeks, and then after the recovery I will be getting back into a good workout.

I'm in the same "rut" but that's because I'm fortunate enough to have, at work, access to a gym with a trainer and other trainers who some in during the week to teach a variety of classes (I know, I know, I am truly blessed here.)  So I take those classes and my week is pretty regular.

Where I mix it up is on the weekends when I'm home.  I have  nearly a dozen different DVDs with everything from cardio to strength training to yoga (Jillian's 30-Day shred, Biggest Loser cardio, Amy Dixon and 10-minute solution DVDs, Kathy Smith weight training, etc....)

This way I get the best of both - a routine that I don't have to worry about (during the week) and options (on the weekend).

Since one of the "big trends" now is interval training, perhaps you can just chage what you do and the length of the intervals are...Prevention's website has some good routines.

Also, an "exercise buddy" who doesn't necessarily have the same likes as you may be a good idea - this way you can each define a routine that emphasizes your preferences, then do that of your buddy's the next time.

Exercise is key for all post-ops... regardless of surgery type.

I wis that I could give you the secret to exercise nirvana... but I lack it myself!

I will, however, be starting a kettle bell class at my gym on Sunday.  Kettle bells are supposed to combine cardio and weight training.. both of which I need desperately!

I think finding a few things that you can rotate through to keep it fresh would be a good idea... I speak theoretically, mind you!  LOL

I can get in a rut pretty easily if I am working out alone.  I tend to do whatever is the quickest and easiest to get it over with.
However, last year I was doing the P90X videos with a friend and gradually our group grew to 8 of us and it was actually fun to go.  So for me the trick is to find someone that is as committed as I that won't flake out on me and push me to be there.  Also, the concept of the P90 program is muscle confustion so different muscles are always getting worked, instead of the same routine all the time.
