From what I gathered, first bite syndrome is more common for women, and drinking right before eating should help, as well as making sure the first bite is really tiny and moist.  It could mean taking a bite of a soft veg before the first bite of protein, just to get things started.  Sometimes if I think I am tight I will try the mushy broccoli before I try the pork, for example, so that I don't have as painful a response..........sometimes I am then able to eat, and sometimes I have to stop and drink my protein later.

I am learning that drinking  my protein when tight is what is appropriate and shouldn't feel like a failure, but that we don't want to be so tight that we cannot ever eat solid protein, but it is OK as a temporary measure as long as we don't rely on it or add in other calories..........

I am definitely still learning!

Yes, always learning.

I agree and I know what to do to avoid first bite - some people do confuse this with being too tight and it is not so - although it can be a symptom of getting closer to the Green Zone.
Jean M is a wonderful teacher - she sometimes appears on this board - and 50+ board -
she helped me with that one a few days ago.

I have to just stop and think and prepare my throat by drinking something warm and then
a little mushy and eventually well chewed MOIST protein - if it's chicken I may have to add a
little lite mayo, etc. I dont want to dilute the protein with veggies.  This usually happens after
working all day - walking in the door - and "sampling" something!!  Old habits....etc.

Thanks,

K

Kernie -

thanks so much for the great info.

at the WLS support group I was at on Saturday, we talked a bit about Allergy season and how it can 'mess with the band'.

If you think about how inflamed and swollen your sinus cavities can get at this time of year, it is no wonder that the stomach can be impacted also.

Also the 'eat 1/2 cup -- wait a bit and assess whether or not you need more -- is stressed by my doctor.  Again the old 'just because you can eat more, does not mean you should eat more'.
We should be aiming for satiety, and not fullness --- retraining my brain to what 'enough' feels, looks and tastes like will really be my big work.  I have been used to 'too much' for too long.

I appreciate the post --- and hope you are surviving (and thriving) the 'back on track-ed-ness"

Thanks!  I had figured out the allergy thing, but not the TOM thing......I was focused on mucous and not the mucous membranes themselves, which are also in our stomachs, DUH me.........

Plus getting "sick" like right know I have a low-grade TMI Yeast infection and that's making it worse, it's no wonder I am so tight I can hardly swallow in the mornings........

But taking his advice and doing only liquids and not trying to eat anything is really helping with how I feel, the only hurdle at this point is getting the swelling down so I don't have to get an unfill...........

Even  I need retraining on enough because I want to stay at goal and I realize that reining in my volume is necessary for me to do that!

So important to remember to also be hydrated when working out....and staying hydrated, because I find when I'm DEHYDRATED, I and tight too.  If I drink plenty when exercising, and drinking up until a meal, it is easier to eat an appropriate meal.

Thanks Kerniec!

That's why I HATE being tight like I am right now, because it's so hard to get in my water.  I have "only" drank 106 oz water, 10oz lowcal juice........and two lattes and a protein shake and a smoothie.....I guess since I have done nothing but drink today it's not as bad as I thought, I got more liquids in my food today.  It's like being post-op!
