Hello there, I just happened to be checking out this board tonight and found the information about the "Molina" band after watching Big Medicine.  I had the band with Dr. Marcel Molina done in 1997 and had it revised to a RNY in 2003.  The procedure that Dr. Molina performed was technically called "Gastric Segmentation Surgery".  Because he did so many of them... 7,500 was the last count I heard...people started calling it a Molina band.  Dr. Marcel Molina had an assistant surgeon, Dr. Horatio Oria.  Dr. Molina passed away in 2003 (maybe 2002), but according to Dr. Oria's website, he is performing the surgery http://www.doctor-oria.com/SevereObesity1.html  I personally do not recommend it, but some folks are still having it done.  I don't know about y'all but I'm really enjoying that Big Medicine show!! Take care, Jackie 396/145

I don't really care to much for it. They focus to much on gastric bypass and plastic surgery of course I would rather see more focus on the lap band. But this is just my opinion. Dren

I guess I like it so much because I've met a lot of those people.  And I love Dr. LoMonaco.  He really is a terrific person. Jackie

I agree the Dr's are great but the psyc I can not say a nice thing about her. How would she know what we being obese would or would not do it we weren't big. She has kept people from getting surgery because she hasn't a clue about obesity. She thinks we should just get up off our a** and diet, exercise. Well I know most one here have and failed. What she doesn't realize is by getting this surgery we are given a tool to aid us in weight loss. Enough said I REALLY DO NOT LIKE HER!!!

You, look great! I love that show. The women who had the Molina band removed, did her sister have surgery? And if she did have the surgery how much did she lose?

What is the different between the Molina band and the Lap band?

Thanks, GOD BLESS R,

Hi there,

The "Molina Band" is non-adjustable.  When it is placed... it is placed tightly and doesn't have the ability to get filled.  I don't know what kind of "rules" they have for it now, but in 1997, I was told that I could only drink 2 oz of liquid per hour for the rest of my life.  Dr. Molina publicly stated in his seminars that "all fat people are waterlogged" and we drink too much anyway.  Also told never to drink that 2 oz. of liquid within an hour before or an hour after eating.  The expectations were too unrealistic.  The failure rate is very high.  My stomach is so thankful that the band was removed.  I know many people who have been revised from this procedure.

Yes, to answer your question... Penelope (the sister) had surgery in the first or second episode.  I believe it was 3 months prior to the one tonight.

Jackie

She was really giving it to her sister wasn't she. I thought she could have been a little nicer her sister was a little scared. I kind of felt sorry for her. And yes you do look great. Dren

I had the Malina band in the 80s. Now I'm dieing from it. The band was put on to tight. I had difficulty from the very beginning but thought it was part of the procedure. I was miserable through up all the time, could not eat and drink at the same time or I thought I was dieing. 25+ years later I find out the band was cutting the circulation off my organs my spleen is now enlarged, I have varicose veins in my esophagus and ciroses of the liver all because of the Molina band being put on to tight.
