Hi Everyone! Do you have to remove acrylic nails before surgery? I don't think you can really take the polish off of them(well I guess you could but..). Thanks, Dawn

Hi Dawn, I wear gel nails and did not have to remove them. I usually get a French Manicure, so I think the problem is that the natural nails turn blue if there is a problem and that would show through the covering. Check with your doctor. Anita

It depends on what your doc says some docs i have heard let patients go in will nail done this is now so ask your doc when i had my lipo done 2 and 3 years ago i had to make sure all acrylics were off so i gladly took them off and hand a plain manicure and pedicure done minus the clear nail polih too also to shower in the morning of surgery with antibacterial soap i did no lotions no frangrance body splash or nothing i believe this is so they can see the color of your nail beds if something goes wrong ....when i had lapband put in i didn't even ask i just did the same as i did before.... do as your doc says rubina

I was told it was okay just to take the nailpolish off, but after i removed it my acryllics looked awful and had yellowed, so you couldn't see through half of them anyway. I ended up ripping them all off, except my thumbs which were stuck solid. Only a week post op, so I'm housebound til the doc gives me the okay to drive. I miss my nails. I'd say err on the side of caution and just take them off, unless you're sure yours are clear.

The nurse in the hospital told me they don't request that anymore. They used to say the pulse ox machine would not register properly if you had nail polish on. On the safe side I got french instead of polish before I went in.

Unless they tell you specifically to remove them, you can leave them on. The pulse ox machine (which measures the amount of oxygenation in your blood) can be placed on your ear lobe if needed. Light colored polishes make it easier for the oximeter to take readings through. So go light and save the dark stuff for after. (I am not giving madical advice, just stating the facts).

I didn't remove my french acrylics. Nothing was said about it.
