I live here in BR and was having trouble finding a doctor. Being on Humana Medicare Advantage I called them and they have a special department for weight loss surgery. They recommend Ochsner's in New Orleans. I went to the first meeting and there were guite a few people on Medicare and Medicade. Here is the contact info

Everyone else, this is not the first time a ray of hope has been darkened for prospective weight loss surgery patients. Right after Katrina things were almost hopeless and some things changes and a good number of people were helped.
The medical availability and surgeon availability is constantly changing. Keep your ears open, remain open and stay in online communities that will afford you the most information about possible opportunities.
Most of all, don't give up because there's so much to gain.
Onward!

A Banded Brain! (read blog)
"Banded for life, switched for good, bypassed by none" (revised, work in progress)
ONE morning, try to get up a little early and head to Decatur Street. Cafe Du Monde is great, but there's no need to stand in line an hour for a fried donut, everywhere in New Orleans has beignets... You should have breakfast at the Market Cafe, then go through the French Market... take your time, shop around, enjoy people watching... get some kickass sunglasses for $5... but besides the sunglasses, don't pay full price for anything... talk 'em down! On the other side of Decatur from the market are plenty of neat little shops. One of my favorites is Serendipitous Masks, if you want to see some gorgeous, handmade mardi gras masks.... anyway, lunch at Margaritaville or the Gazebo Cafe (mmm ice cream daiquiris!) is a great way to end a morning on decatur street.... this is a MUST DO!
Night time, of course, walk up and down bourbon and go crazy! you must have a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens and you MUST have a hand grenade, those are the only two requirements....
If you want to spend a lot of money and do things that have absolutely nothing to do with NOLA culture, you can go to the aquarium or take a ride on the riverboat natchez..... but you gotta get in the middle of the quarter and just walk around.... don't stick to bourbon street... Make your way up and down Dumaine, Royal, Chartres, St. Peters, Toulouse.... but at night, if there's a street and it isn't lit very well and you don't see a lot of people walking up and down it... TURN AROUND and walk back towards the lights and people, DO NOT hesitate! lol Explore, and you'll find plenty of things to keep your attention! All you need to pay for is food, drinks and getting into strip clubs... don't let someone sell you a "tour" and don't take a horse carriage ride around the quarter either, too expensive and the person driving will pick a random building and tell you sandra bullock owns it.. (they don't know where).... make your own fun, be your own tour guide, soak up the culture and have a blast!!!
And remember, you've never really been drunk on Bourbon until you're stumbling out of a bar at 4am to go find the Lucky Dog stand before going back to the hotel!...
OH and if it's 4am and you can't remember which way your hotel was, just get a damn cab
...okay....that's my quickie NOLA tourist tips.... if i can think of ANYTHING else, I'll be sure and let you know! my e-mail is [email protected]
If you have ANY questions about ANYthing, please email me!! NOLA is a beautiful experience and I hope you enjoy the hell out of yourself!
Over 10 years ago started trying to have wls. Never was able to get an insurance to approve. Never able to afford it otherwise.
I had given up on the idea, figured it would never happen. Married my husband a year ago and am now on his insurance (he's a retired vet). Never even thought about wls in relation to his insurance until my pcm suggested it. I think he was surprised at how receptive I was to the idea!! lol
A referral was sent in to Humana, I was approved and now have an appointment with Dr. Thomas Lavin in LA!! They've already verified the insurance and said that I'm approved for the surgery!!
I have an appointment in early April.
Now I have questions that I hope those of you that have been through this before can answer...
My appointment is with the NP.
What will be the next step? How long before meeting with the NP is the surgery normally scheduled for?
The woman on the phone said something about buying their weight loss plan. When I questioned her she said that they would talk to me about it at the appointment.
Do I have to lose weight BEFORE surgery? Isn't the fact that I have a problem with weight loss the reason I'm doing this???
If you have had surgery what kind did you have? Why did you pick that type and are you happy with your decision?
Any info that anyone can share with me would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Toni
