Did anyone start to gain more weight once they made their decision to go through with WLS because they started eating things they figured they would never get to eat again after the surgery?

I didn't actually decide completely to go through with it until after I had my initial consult with the surgeon. I had my NUT appt. the next week, I did feel like I wanted to do that, but the NUT cautioned me against it, putting me on a low fat diet, which is much better. I do cheat a bit tho, and have been eating bites, not pigging out, on things that i will miss. Good luck to you!! Cindee

Nope...the healing phase was restrictive, but I eat all the same things with a greater focus on healthy vegetables and leaner protein. There's a lot more "flavor" in my life and much less caloric intake. Eventually, even an RNY postop should be able to have reasonable samplings of all your favorites. Try to think of that so you don't over do it preop. Onward! Frances

Well, I have my consultation with the surgeon in a few weeks. I am hoping that I can have my surgery scheduled for June. I will be a self pay since my insurance has an exclusion clause. I know that you are put on a diet prior to the surgery. I also know that I will have to give up certain foods permanently, and I am ok with that. I am 42, and the first real diet I recall being on was when my mother took me to weigh****chers when I was in the second grade. I have worked in the medical field, and I have research the surgery over the years, but being a widow and the mother of a small child, I was too scared to go through with it. On my 42 birthday I woke up and said to myself, "This is enough." I can make up all the excuses in the world, Katriana, gym still closed, etc, etc, but we all know the never ending battle we have all gone through. I just feel like I binging before another diet.

I didn't gain but I also didn't lose. I ate the same stuff. The only thing I really wanted to do before surgery was go to Macaroni Grill. I never did!!! Like you it hit me at 42 that I needed to do something. This has been the best thing I could have done. Good luck with your journey. Jodi

OK let me be your REALISTIC answer ,, NO OFFENSE to anyone else,, YES YES YES I did gain some weight ,, nothing drastic , just like 3-5pds maybe,, But there were foods I knew I wouldn't be able to have again or not for a LONG time that I did eat before the surgery,, foods that were my favorite and I knew I would crave ,, I thought it would be better to have them and get them out my system and then I wouldn't crave them,,, well that did work the week before my surgery I ate everything I wanted fattening and speciality foods The only thing is after my surgery I craved different things!!! Like before wls I HATED I mean hated spaggetti and now I want it soo bad!!! lol I find it funny,,,,, But my doctor didn't have me on any liquids only diet, or low fat diet before ,, so see what your doctor puts you on and go by that,, it doesn't hurt you to eat good before surgery, or well I don't think so. I don't know if you've had wls yet or are waiting on insurance , but let us know what you do or think, I would love to know!

Nope--I use the same group of surgeons as you and know they are very liberal with their pre op diet but, took the info seriously about a low carb diet will shrink the fat around the liver and make the lap surgery be more possible and error free. I loss 15 lbs pre op but I did get upset with them one day when I was at the docs office signing papers and everything to finalize on a Friday to have surgery on Monday and as I was leaving my doc came in to tell me he had to delay my surgey because the doc assisting him had to cancel. The delay was 3 weeks. I was so upset on the way home I had the blinker on to turn into Sonic for a blast but good sence kicked in and I didn't. My surgery was complication free and so far I have had 3 easy post op weeks. Be strong and be positive--bj
