JUST HAVE A QUESTION
Hi Danielle,
This is an area of high interest to me. I've had recurrent complicated hernias. My weight loss surgeon and my hernia repair specialist are the same person. This was a complete accident that worked to my benefit.
I've had six surgeries due to hernia-related complications. None of these complications are related to my weight loss surgery, but the bariatric aspect of my health had to be taken into consideration during the surgeries and who better to look after my wls "guts" than the person who also performed the bariatric surgery.
I've also edited an article for my doctor submitted to a bariatric journal and mesh and mesh types were greatly discussed. I've had both synthetic and collagen-graft meshes and I think both can be "worked around" during subsequent surgeries. Once, part of my synthetic mesh was removed and the rest remained in place. The graft patches become a part of your body in time so it wouldn't be just like any other tissue that was cut and regenerates.
Dr. LeBlanc was a world-renowned hernia specialists before opening his practice to bariatrics. Since you are researching and exploring surgery, I think it would really be worth your time to have a consult to asks these questions while you are looking. Another patient friend, Dee LeGleu lives near you in Berwick.
I have a lap band, but most of the patients in our support group are RNYs. Please let me know if I can help answer any more questions or offer contact information.
All my best,
Frances
