Kateri only you know if this surgery is right for you. But look at the statistic people dying form WLS is very low. The good in it out weighs the bad for me. I can now ride a bike with my son, I can play basketball and tball with him, things I couldn't do 100lbs ago. This surgery has been a blessing to me. I've been on this board for almost a year now and can only remember two people dying one was before she even had surgery from her weight problems and the other was after surgery from a blood clot. Doctors now take extra precautions to avoid blood clots. I was nervous at first too but like I said the good far out weighed the bad. Good luck in your decision I know you will make the right one for you. Tina

I can understand your nervousness, but I personally think that you are making the right decision. I know it is the best thing that I have EVER done for myself!! I've lost 125 lbs. in 17 months and feel better than I EVER have before!! I can do things that I only dreamed about before. Don't worry too much about your surgeon leaving. There are plenty of great doctors and surgeons that can take care of you when yours moves. My surgeon is Dr. Louis Martin in Baton Rouge. (He was originally in N.O., but moved to BR after Katrina) I highly recommend him after yours is gone. Baton Rouge is not that far from Opelousas. Of course, hopefully, you will not need a SURGEON again after your initial surgery. Just find a good PCP or whoever your surgeon recommends for follow-up. Some people are going to be more afraid for you than others, but this is YOUR life and YOUR decision. God WILL give you wisdom!! Blessings, Pam

Hi....I think that this surgery is a RIGHT decision because my health was getting so bad. I know that I would have died sooner by my health complications than what I would from the surgery!! My diabetes was getting really bad and my kidneys were showing signs of diabetes and I had tried so many diets on my own and it never worked for long. My new pouch is a tool to help me live a healthier longer life and be there for my children. You've probably seen your surgeon by now and I hope you made the RIGHT decision! Keep us posted!

That is exactly why I chose to tell only a select few. I still have not told my mom or some of my siblings. I told them I was having surgery for my GERD and they were supportive, but I don't know if they would have been knowing what I had actually done. One day I will let them know. They don't live anywhere close to me. My inlaws lived close by and I also told them I was having surgery for my GERD, I have since told them. I kind of had to, they were surprised at how much weight I had lost. They have been very supportive. Only you can make this decision, but I am am going to tell you it is the best thing that I could have done. I feel great. I prayed very hard throughout my whole journey and I really felt at peace going into it...Please keep us posted with your appt today. Hugs to you.... Jodi
