Okay I get it about needing protein. I have talked to so many people and starting this morning I will start getting my protein in. Vitalady said 3 shakes a day and hers has 30 gr of protein in each, which i have already anyway. I guess I just didnt realize. I do alot of meat, ground sauage and ground chuck and I do eat alot of chicken too. Does drinking the protein make you start to lose weight again too? Michelle at vitalady said eat 4 or times a day small meals and drink the drinks in between. thank you all for caring so much Denise 250/206/150

The "protein" in the drinks are not better than the protein in solid food, but after RNY, it's harder for you to get the minimum amount from solid foods, so you supplement it with the shakes. The protein by itself isn't a "weight loss spark." It's still calories in-calories out. If you take in less calories than you burn, you will lose weight. As you start to lose weight again, the protein will help you maintain your lean tissues and lose the fat. You want to have decent muscle mass because muscle burns fat and you will become a fat-burning machine -- like a furnance. That's why some type of exercise is important as soon as possible. Walking is good at first. As you burn calories by exercising, that protein will help keep the muscle and burn the fat. I don't use protein shakes because I had the lap band and I can easily consume enough solid protein each day. I still watch those protein grams like a hawk. My goal is to have at least 20 grams of protein per meal and I eat three meals a day. I supplement with drinks when I'm ill and can't eat normally. Also, I put protein powder in some mushie solids like oatmeal, yogurt, pudding. Are you getting any vegetables right now? This will help you with vitamins as well as fiber. I'm so glad to hear from you on this because I was extremely concerned. I feel better knowing you are eating some meat. Frances

Hey, I was told by my dietician that the best amount of protien is if there is 20 grams per serving. And if your drinking a shake with protein, check and see what the amount of protien is per serving. Like a lot of protein powders will say per scoop, then you check to see what the scoop goes into, most are 8 ounces of some type of liquid. If you put the powder into 8 ounces of skim milk there is an extra 8 grams of protein for you. Also you need to watch to fats and sugars and calories in the shakes/powders. Of course you have to have fats in your diet but have to watch the amounts of everything. She suggested not going over 2.5 grams of fat per serving, not over 210 calories and not over 5 grams of sugar. I have to have 90 grams of protien a day after surgery. Protein also help promote healing and does help you lose the weight! At my dietician class we looked at over ten different protein labels that were powder and the liquids. I noticed a lot of them only have about 10 grams of protein per serving and a serving size is about 12 ounces, and it'll have 5 grams of fat, of course that is NOT a good one to get! After reading SO many of the protein powders and trying several already, I bought some from Walmart. Two pound container, it's chocolate. It is Body Fortress, Premium Whey Protein Powder. I can't stand the taste in water or anything else, so i'm sticking with skim milk and that also gives you extra protein. Onc scoop goes into 8 ounces. Calories 110, Fat 2.5, Protein 20, Sugars 1!!! The price was about $15.00. So bottom line is not to just look at the protein but to look at all four things, protein, fat, sugar and calories! I was also told not to eat and drink at the same time, leave about a 20 minute time between eating and drinking. Remember shellfish is a great source of protein too.

All of the above are fabulous answers There's not a lot I have to add, but I wanted to tell you my favorite is to just mix 1/2 scoop unflavored Unjury (16 scoops per $16 canister) in each bottle of my crystal lite for the day. I get 10 grams protein, minimal fat/carbs and like 100 cals... you can look up the info on the site below under the unflavored unjury http://www.obesityhelplouisiana.com Enjoy!
