Crawfish is a source of lean protein. It provides protein with little fat and no carbohydrates in return. A small serving is 75 calories. Even if you ate 25 pounds before, that wasn't 25 pounds of tails. You don't count the 80 percent of the crawfish that gets thrown away. Pre-surgery, you weren't doing bad by eating 5 pounds of crawfish. Sodium is an issue for a lot of people, but at your age and health, that's not an issue and salt content can be adjusted.
A chef/nutritionist spoke at my first support group meeting (mostly RNY) and he went on and on about using lean protein seafood like crawfish all year round if one could find/store it.
Honestly, Ashley, so much emphasis is put on starving to death, that enough people don't see that you still have to eat everyday. Just because you enjoy something isn't a good enough reason to give it up.
Educate yourself some more about good protein choices and the best ways to get them in. That same small serving of crawfish has 17 grams of protein in it. You will need about 60 grams a day and it's got to come from somewhere. This wouldn't be cheating or even an endulgence. Crawfish is a good food choice.
Disclaimer: Living in South Louisiana all my life, I know the usual crawfish boil includes some starchy vegetables and beer a good bit of time. It's not a requirement for everyone, so I wasn't speaking to those factors. I know that high cholesterol is also not a factor for Ashley (or me.. woohoo).
I say dilemma "solved."
Frances
ashley, you will be suprised, your taste buds change after surgery also.you may not even want it. I like shrimp, but my stomach doesn't like it to much now, i can eat them but usually very small, 3 at most, trust me your weight loss excitement will over rule the wants, you'll see... don't worry,, rhonda
Hey I know what you mean I'm from Alabama and we love to eat all that fat filled greasy southern food. I thought how will I not eat Mama's cooking she is the best cook in the world. But now I don't want to eat. Your whole system changes and it is for the best. You will be surprise at what you can still eat just not in such large quantities. You'll see it's not that bad. Believe it or not you will actually have to start making yourself eat because you don't want too. But I know exactly how your feeling and it's perfectly normal. Hope you hear something soon about your surgery!!!
Tina
Hi...i'm not gonna preach plus I haven't had the surgery yet so I can't preach, but I'm just a little concerned because if you are that worried about the food you will miss, I'm worried about you being depressed after and not being successful with your surgery! Like as if I really have room to talk...my birthday is next month and every year for the past how many ever years we've been going to Mike Andersons and every year since I was born my mom makes me a homemade red velvet cake with a YUMMY pudding icing with coconut and pecans....the cake is so good! Well anyway....I know that since surgery is Monday that means I wouldn't even be able to take a bite of the good stuff! So tomorrow night we are celebrating my "Last Supper" and "birthday dinner" at mike andersons of course and moma will have my cake made too! So I don't really have much room to talk about food! LOL
But also, girl....me and crawfish, oh yeah.....i love it!!! But also like Frances said it's a great source of protien! All shellfish is! For me, I'm going to have to do 90 grams of protien a day. My surgeon is a tad bit stricter with the dieting after surgery though. For about the first 3 months I won't really be eating anything regular and when I do, fats won't be a part of the equation!!!! And to me the crawfish will have too much fat and I more than likely will not want it....that is my way of thinking for now anyway. I know my stomach pouch will be just an ounce in a few days and i know not much can fit in it. Like Tina said 3 shrimp and you'll be full. But bottom line to it is.....i have heard also that your taste buds change after surgery and you will probably be more than happy with just a couple of crawfish.
Good luck and keep us posted!!!!
Maybe I'm missing someting, but since you pointed out crawfi****hought this was actually a good thing to like. I might sound like a marketing rep for Louisiana food, but it doesn't fall into the category of fat-filled, greasy Southern Food.
Here's a quote on the nutritional value:
"""""""""
Crawfish are a nutritional, low fat seafood which is unique and delicious. How can this be? What we call "fat" on a crawfish is actually part of the pancreas. It adds extra flavor to the crawfish but not extra fat. A 5/8 cup of crawfish tails contains a healthy portion of Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron and 2% total fat and 0% saturated fat.
""""""""
A serving of crawfish has 1 gram of fat. A serving of plain tuna -- the dieting poster food -- also has 1 gram of fat. Your body will tell you when you have had enough and you will be satisfied with a smaller portion.
I hope you can have a normal life with a normal relationship with food someday. I know this is possible after wls, so why not shoot for that. This means that you still enjoy your favorite foods, but your consumption of it is in healthy levels.
I don't know why I'm writing all this about crawfish, but I know and love you Ashley. I think you can have the perfect body and still enjoy crawfish or anything else that makes you happy. I'm in the minority here, but that's OK. If you posted that you are going to miss fried chicken thighs, my response might have been different (hmm...might)
Let's talk soon, ok?
You are not alone.
Frances
Hey Frances.....you mentioned the fried chicken thing.....and being a minority, well, my boys are mixed and beautiful, LOL, but anyway, anytime we go to their grandparents, there is ALWAYS good homemade fried chicken and a yummylicious gravy from the chicken grease!!! So anyway, I told my ex mother in law that next time we go visit, she can make me some other good soul food that isn't too fattening, she just kinda of laughed and said honey even if i cook you some greens and cornbread, you know I put ham and bacon in my greens and the cornbread, sorry but I can't make it unsweet, LOL. So.....anyway....looks like I'll bringing my own thing, which will probably still be the liquids anyway next time we go visit!
Also, I'm really excited to hear how good crawfish really is for us!!! I should have done some research on it my myself instead of listening to other people huh!!! But anyway, you put a smile on my face when I heard about the crawfish!
Hugs.........Christie
Okay here goes....
I found out in late October I was having surgery on November 28th....
so what did Ido....every day I had a food I loved. I felt what if I dont' or can't have it again. I was very satisfied on the day I had surgery. The hardest part for me was Christmas. That is a distant memory.
At 8 weeks out I could probably eat about 6 crawfish....but in a few hours I could have 6 more. You'll see it isn't about eating until you are so sick you are full. It's about having a taste and savoring the flavor.
Some places are selling boiled crawfish already....so have some and remember this isn't the last time you are having this, but it will bea while before you have it again.
I'm trying new foods every few days. I'm also 8 weeks out now. Everything is going to be great and you will be fine. You have to mentally change how you eat. The biggest battle of this surgery is the mental war.
I will say this when I came out of surgery I freaked out about coke. Realizing I'll never have another one and I love love love them. So one night I found a coke. The next morning that coke was still calling me. I decided I just needed it in my mouth, didn't need to swallow. Well when I got it in my mouth it was so disgusting I spit it out.
The only time I miss coke now is when others are drinking it in front of me.
Also I didn't coo****il I could eat. Luckily I have a very understanding family.
Trust me it doesn't seem like I had surgery 2 months ago, but I did and everything is getting better.
