ASTHMA & RNY

To make a long story short, I was banded in 2003 and have had serious problems since banding that lead to severe shortness of breath and reflux. It has slipped and is around my esophagus and I no longer have the band around my stomach. After being hospitalized five times this year and having declining health since banding, it has to be removed. I have severe asthma, I use my rescue inhaler 10 times or more a day if I need to and I also do breathing treatments. Would getting the RNY be the same effect? That is what I am scared of. The band slows your digestion and keeps the food sitting on the chest and slowly empties, which for me makes my asthma/reflux worse. I also throw up often since I get chest pain when eating certain foods and because it has slipped, which also makes my asthma worse. If the rny is restrictive as well wouldnt I have the same effect? Please help me with this if you can. I am not sure now if I should even do the removal and get the RNY.

I've had the band for almost a year and a half. I don't think a person who is banded or has RNY should be giving the advice in this matter. This seems to be at the medical expert level, not patient level because you need to know how the tool will operate; not just how we will react to it. Please call a doctor's office and had this question poised. If you want, I can put in a request for you, but it will be to a doctor or bariatric nurse -- not a banded patient or a RNY patient. Email me if you want a medical referral and phone number. This won't cost you anything, but I would never give you a journalist's view of something so important. All my best, Frances
