Frances- Thanks for taking the bull by the horns in Gemma's need. Man, if I was anywhere near LA, I'd be calling around to find her hospital room number and I'd be there with menus and have a bag of products in tow too. Let me know if I can lend any help from up here in NY-including financial help. Bless you-it has warmed my heart to read your posts. BS

Gemma Rachel, I think I personally have been numb since the hurricane - I live in the Tampa area and am ashamed to admit that I seem to have been paralyzed enough by the shock of the whole thing that I have not done nearly what I should to try to do my little piece on this time of unspeakable need for many. Shame on me. I am pre-op, and cannot begin to fathom being in your situation. You must be an incredibly strong, and blessed woman to go through what you have, be where you are, and be reaching out as you are to this community. I will most certainly add you to my prayers IMMEDIATELY and VIGOROUSLY - and I suspect that are more like you than I might have been thinking about. May God bless you - and I trust that out of all this your new life will rise in a spectacular fashion! Frances, You are indeed an angel !! (Editorial note, for what it's worth: Most of us these days know the various stages of grief. Some of us are in shock (like me), some of us cry a lot, and some of us turn to anger when our lives or those who we care about have been turned upside down. Presumably most of us do all of these emotions at one point or another. While there is plenty to be angry about in this situation, we need to be sensitive and accepting of where others are at the moment.)

Dear Gemma, I am pre op so I don't have any dietary advice but I do have the best of wishes to send to you. I hope that each day becomes easier for you as I know the days ahead will be long ones. I wa**** by Hurricane Charley last year. Even though it was not anywhere near the magnitude of Katrina I am still recovering both at my home , my business and my emotional well being. I pray that you have great strength and patience. If you have homeowner's insurance they may cover your loss of food in the freezer and refrigerator. It is a long tedious process. Save all receipts and take photos. God Bless you and your family.

my heart goes out to you. I am an evacuee also. I can't imagine being displaced while in surgery mode. You should be on full liquids now, protein shakes, low carbs, low sugar, low fat. Possibly even mushys.

Gemma- Hang on. You have been through so much. In the early days on liquids, I had those EAS Advantage shakes from Kroger in French Vanilla. It is 15g of protein in 11oz of liquid. I also use unjury unflavored powder in fat free yogurt. Blessings on you and your family during this very trying time. I hope you have a home to return to in the coming months. Hugs for you, Kim Lap DS 07/12/05

Gemma Rachal I have nothing to offer but prayers. The only thing I know is that I can not even begin to imagine what you and your fellow evacuee's have been through. I'm surprised you haven't forgotten your name let alone remember a new way of eating. I will pray that you and your hubby are able to find the supplies and support you need. Elaine

I too am glad to see other more productive response to help Gamma. Just hate to see people castigate blame during time of disaster..I am sure the hospital at that time was in total chaos, and may not be able to provide the standard of care for Gamma. However, that is perfectly understandable, however unfortunate during the time of catastrophic disaster. Meanwhile, I still find it disturbing that anything remotely substandard in treatment of obesity surgery is automatically classified as "malpractice"...that is just a disease of our society that assess blame first, then sort out the detail later syndrome. If I am Denise's doctor, I would think twice before treating her next. Besides, that is simply not helpful to incite anger to Gamma's surgeon at this time of crisis. There are other ways to provide sympathy. I am so glad Frances is so proactive in finding help for Gamma..God bless you..now that is productive help, and I am sure very much welcomed. Just my two cents...Laurie
