Long Term Medical Care

Hi, I my name is Fran. I read on the board all the time, but I rarely post. I have been going thru Neweigh for 6 months, and my insurance just approved me for the lap rny. I originally wanted the band, but Aetna won't pay for it unless there's a reason you can't have rny. So I'm having my surgery in August because of a previously scheduled trip in July. Anyway I have a question about the long term. I haven't ever seen anyone address this. Since I have no medical knowledge, what are the likely problems that one might have 10,20,30 years down the road? Is there anything I should be concerned with about the way my stomach and intestines will function? I am obviously well aware that vitamins and protein supplements will be a way of life for me, and I've researched the surgery, that part I'm not worried about, but I'm still concerned, even if I do all the right things, what else may I need to be on the watch for? I am doing this to get myself healthy, so I am around 40 years from now. I know there are no 30 year out patients for this surgery, but I am hoping that someone who knows more than me about the human body (which is probably everyone) will comment on their thoughts or experiences. Thanks

There is really no way to know what you will be facing 15 to 20 years from now. I have several friends who are 15 to 20 years out and the only health problem that that they have is osteoporosis and they do have dental problems. I have a friend who is 17 years out, 47 years old and is in perfect health. I too wondered what the long term effects would be for this surgery but the bottom line for me was that I would be a lot better off having the surgery than I would be if I didn't have it. I wish you the best of luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

What type of dental? Does the malabsorbtion affect the gums? That seems possible, I'll have to ask my dentist. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

Hi Fran, My name is Frances and I'm also in the Baton Rouge area. You will probably have your surgery at the same hospital that I did. I can't offer any advice because I had the lap band, but I do want to suggest you get a list of your questions and concerns and run them past your surgeon. They should be able to give you all of that information. This can be a wonderful journey, but it will be very scary if you don't have someone who can fill in ALL the blanks for you. That's what they are there for and everyone benefits from your success story and good health. My best to you in your journey, Frances
