I am on the fast track now! I have decided that I have fought the good fight but can not have the insurance company waste anymore of my time and life! I am going to self pay and with this decision I will be having the lap bad procedure the second week of June! I met with my surgeon yesterday and got my prescriptions and I am ready to roll. I do need info on where to get Optifast - if anyone can help me with that!!!! I will continue to fight for WLS to be available to ALL that need it! I plan to rally my local legislatures to end this discrimination!!! Good luck to all on the path and to the rest - see you on the losing side!!!!!

Congrats on the date, Nicole! I have a friend who ended up paying for her surgery herself also. She said that she was making an investment in her life. She has lost over 100# and feels great. Hope everything goes well for you! Don't know about optifast but if I find out anything I will post it here. T--resa

HI, NICOLE. I HAD AN OPEN RNY IN APRIL, 2005. I WAS THE ONLY PERSON, UNTIL NOW, THAT I KNEW OF THAT HAD HAD THE SURGERY SELF PAY. I ACTUALLY HAVE WORKED AT THE SAME HOSPITAL WHERE MY SURGERY WAS DONE FOR 26 YEARS AS AN RN. THE WLS FIELD IS NEW TO MY HOSPITAL AND I WAS THRILLED WHEN I HEARD THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE AVAILABLE. AND YOU CAN IMAGINE MY DISAPPOINTMENT WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT OUR GROUP INSURANCE HAD NO COVERAGE FOR THE TREATMENT FOR OBESITY. EVENTUALLY, A FRIEND WHO HAD HAD THE SURGERY AND LOST OVER 100LBS. ADVISED ME NOT TO LET THAT STOP ME. SO, I SET OUT TO BORROW THE MONEY AND WILL PAY IT BACK OVER THE NEXT 4-5 YEARS, JUST AS IF I WERE BUYING A CAR. I THINK OF IT AS AN INVESTMENT IN MY LIFE, HEALTH AND LONGEVITY. SO, I APPLAUD YOU ON YOUR DECISION AND WISH YOU THE BEST. I AM 6 WEEKS POST OP NOW, HAVE LOST 21 LBS. I AM ACTUALLY AT A STANDSTILL NOW, AND SLIGHTLY DOWN ABOUT IT, BUT TRYING TO STAY POSITIVE. GOOD LUCK!!! JANICE ARMSTRONG, RN
