Hi Teesha, When I had my psychological evaluation with Dr. Jerry Sanders, he mentioned that area doctors have been working on getting a bariatric surgery program started at Lane Memorial. It is definitely in the works, but was not operational in 2004. I don't think they are up and running with it yet, but I could be wrong. We live not far from Lane and I've been there a couple of times in the ER with my husband and a neighbor. It might be worth waiting for it they are close to getting it off the ground. My best to you in your journey. Frances

Back in the fall, I saw a newspaper ad for a WLS seminar at Lane with Dr. Taylor. I called his office, the girl answering the phone knew practically nothing. I asked if he did the rny and if he did it open or laprascopically - she said, "No - he does gastric bypass". When I tried to explain to her, I could tell it was way over her head. I asked to have his nurse call me so I could ask some question - doesn't have a nurse - she told me to come to the seminar. I didn't want to waste my time (1 hour + drive). I asked how many gastric bypassess he had done - her answer was 5!!! yes FIVE. I asked how long he'd been practicing, and where else he's practiced, and did he do gastric bypass elsewhere. She didn't know much of anything. I called another department at the hospital, and I think I was told that they had done 2 or 3 WLS since they started performing it. Being a nurse, there's no way I would go to any surgeon who had only done a few of the procedures I was having. Do your research & find a very qualified surgeon - one who's done several hundred or more of the exact procedure you're planning to have done. Also important is the program he/she has - in office registered nurse, dietician, social worker, support group meetings. Be very leary of surgeons who just release you 6 weeks after surgery & then you're on your own.

Wow, this speaks volumes! Aftercare with bariatric surgery can be the difference between life and death and sometimes just having the surgery is the easy part. I hope that the folks at Lane can develop a program not just a way to do 4 or 5 surgeries a year. Thanks for that feedback. Frances
