Constant nausea/heaving/vomiting but no food or water
My sister-in-law is almost 6 wks out and has had nothing but constant nausea/heaving/vomiting (altho she can't eat anything or even drink water!) -- has ANYONE encountered something like this? She has been back in the hospital several times because she gets dehydrated so easily and once she feels better on the IV and comes home, it only takes about 12 hrs and she is sick again! The doctor took out her gallbladder this week and there was a kink in the intestine and an adhesion that was corrected -- he thought this was surely the problem. But her nausea/heaving/vomiting continues -- this cannot go on! I had to take her back to the hospital 2 a.m. this morning -- she is never without a bowl under her mouth! Anyone -- please help! She is on the nausea patch, takes suppositories for nausea and something that also melts under her tongue for nausea -- nothing helps! she was never sick before this!
This is an update -- one gastro dr (on the dr's only net postings) suggested using a drug to "dry up" all the phlemgn (sp?) and mucous. So far it is working! Yeah! My sister-in-law is still in the hospital but is now doing better with the "drying up" technique! Hopefully she will be home this weekend!
I am so glad to hear that your sister in law is doing better. I had severe vomiting after the first 2 weeks of my surgery. I was scoped three times. Finally, the dr. had to go back in and "scrape" out the scar tissue that was blocking my ability to eat or drink anything. I was put on a feeding tube and just got that out on Tuesday (after having it in over 3 mos.) I was extremely ill for a while there and spent a total of 38 days in the hospital during 4 different stays.
I had to have two additional surgeries after my original DS surgery. I am doing MUCH better. It will get better. But, you can get very ill for a while there. I went into metabolic acidosis at one point and my kidneys were shutting down. It may be necessary for her to have a feeding tube placed in her until things settle down some. I know that that was a lifesaver since I couldn't keep anything down. I was on every medication known to man for the nausea.
My prayers and thoughts are with her and your family. I personally know how tough this all can be. She will get better. It will take some time. Keep us posted on her progress.
