Sandra, Hi, my name is Marcie - I am the bariatric coordinator for Dr. Keith Chung in Lake Charles, LA. I have been there postoperatively with about 150 patients now and yes, anesthesia is pretty tough. If your husband is having the surgery laparoscopically, pain will be minimal. He will have some minor chest pain, but most of the pain will be in his back. This is from having his belly filled up with gas during surgery. Some of the gas remains and will press upon his diaphragm, causing the back and shoulder pain. The more he gets up and walks around, the better he will feel. Every day is a better day. Also, he will be a little nauseated from the anesthesia. He may complain that everything tastes funny and "metallic". That is also a fun side effect of the surgery. Tell him what all my patients have told me - the small pain you go throught with surgery is worth it all! Marcie Obesity Surgery Center of Louisiana www.obesitysurgeryla.com

i just came home from the hospital today. had surgery on wed at Shumpert. mine was lap sx and i can confirm what she said about the gassey feeling after sx. also, don't get the wrong idea when they say the pain is minimal. the first day or two it will hurt. but it gets better much quicker than when you have an open procedure. i have had more pain on my left side than anywhere else. the nurse said the doc does most of maneuvering from that spot as well. the drain was aggrevating on my right side but didn't really hurt. as far as anethesia, i was lucky and did not have a lot of nausea. i an thankfull for that and hope your husband does as well. take care TJ
