Insurance problems...denied x 2

I have had weight problems all my life. Earliest memories are going to Doctor at age 10 for diet pills. I am 53 and have fought my weight all my life. When I heard of GBS I was so elated that there was hope afterall. I have approval from my doctor and all seemed near at hand. Then the insurance co. nixed all my hopes. The co. I work for has an exclusion on morbid obesity. I have gone to the top of the co. asking for an exception to the exclusion. I have drawn a solid wall - no way can the exclusion be overturned. Is there anyone who has had this experience?? Anyone with suggestions?? I appreciate any help anyone has to offer!

Hi Linda, do not give up if you have to find a lawyer to write a letter to the insurance co. saying that it is needed badly for your health. hopefully that may help ... some hospitals do finance ..GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU !!!! ....Jane

Jane, thank you so much for the encouragement. I have thought about getting a laywer. I spoke to a lawyer friend that felt because the co. I work for is self insured it would not be wise to have an attorney write a letter. But I think it a good idea to look into financing. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT HOSPITALS WOULD DO THAT! Thanks for the idea. God Bless you, too.

Linda, Numerous hospitals have financing and in fact my surgeon has financing. Also, I have a friend who works for a large retailer whom I will not mention but we all shop there and they have an exclusion in their policy she has tried the lawyer thing, etc. to no avail. However, are you married? If so does your husband have insurance on you? You could drop your insurance and then his would be primary and WoooHoooo (as long as his company doesn't have an exclusion). Good luck. Aspen

Have you thought about filing a grievance against the insurance company with the commisioner of insurance? I am looking at doing that at this moment. Maybe if enough of us complain we can get a law requiring ins. companies to pay for this surgery.

i also have been denied by my insurance company. i called the insurance commisioner and was told that if there is an exclusion in the policy there is nothing they can do. they are there to enforce that if something is supposed to be covered that the insurance company pays it. but as for fighting them to change their policy they didn't do that. i hope you have more success than i did. if you get anywhere and need back up i'm willing to call again. just tell me where to call and who to talk to and i will.
