How to Appeal a Weight Loss Surgery Exclusion
Contributor By eHow Contributing Writer (1 Ratings)Weight loss surgery is a lifesaving procedure that allows many overweight people to live a healthy life. Gastric band surgeries, such as the Lap-Band, in which a band is placed around the opening of the stomach and inflated to give the patient a feeling of fullness, is one of the most common types of weight loss surgery. Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure in which the stomach is made smaller and a large portion of the intestines are bypassed by connecting a portion of the intestines directly to the stomach. Stomach stapling is another option in which the size of the stomach is surgically reduced. Many insurance companies limit patients' access to these surgeries with exclusions. However, it is the patient's right to appeal this exclusion.

Phil.4
6] Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
[7] And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
I know that I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.I have had no problems getting approved. What kind of excusions are the telling you?
All I had to have was 5 years of weight history, that its medically nessary, and that I had a BMI of 40+
I had everything submitted, and was approved in less than 2 weeks.
Are they giving you a specific reason as to why they wont approve it???
I was ready for a battle, but for me it was farily easy. I got assigned to a WLS councler (with in UHC) and she was my case manager from the very begining, and I talked to her at least 1 or 2 times a week, from my 1st consultation appt with my surgon 4 months ago.
Let me know if you have any questions, and I will do what I can to help you out.
I work in a call center as well! The exclusion is that any wls us not covered. However, I have never gone through the process of getting approval. I just called the insurance company to see if Wls was covered. I am starting the process of getting approved at the beginning of the year! I will attend a Wls seminar here in Louisiana and then work with the doctors to get approval! I am sticking with this until I get approved. Please wish me luck!!
Thanks,
I am in Louisiana as well, and I am at a dsl tech support call center for AT&T, in Shreveport.
I wonder why I am covered, and you are not?
I called UHC, and they cover me at 90%... I was so excited, cause most insurances don't even pay that much!
I would check with UHC again, and see maybe if it was added reciently, or in the past couple of years, or months.
Or even HROnestop, or our AT&T bennifents center. They should be able to help you also.
I know several people in my center that have had the surgery with our insurance, and had no issues as well getting approved. ummm... This makes me wonder, well I know all divisions of insurances are different, but you wouldn't think that they would be THAT different...
Keep me posted, and I will keep my eyes and ears open too!!!
Best wishes...
