I am 9 months post OP as of the first of this month. I am also 12 weeks pregnant.I KNOW THIS IS NOT GOOD BUT WHAT IS DONE IS DONE. I quit taking my depression meds when I found out I was pregnant for the safety of the baby. I am happy to say that we both are healthy and doing well so far. My big problem is I am wanting to eat all the time I think It is due to not having the depression meds. I know I am hormonal due to the pregnancy but this is out of control. I eat more than most ppl who are 9 months out at one time....I cannot talk to anyone in my family cause they don't understand. I know it may seem easy...Just eat what you are suppose to...but you know i have an eating disorder as do most of us who have these weight loss surgeries that problem does just not go away. It is mental...i am just really depressed....i am 60 lbs from MY goal. I am not trying to loose weight right now nor am i trying to gain. seems like I have forgotten all that I learned....or the will power to do so. Yes there are other things going on in my life....I have discovered that I am a stress eater...I don't know why i am posting... I just want to fix my wrong..need to get on track I did not have this surgery to fail it. Maybe someone has had this same issue. If you can help I will listen.

I have not even had my surgery yet...am still on the pre-op full liquid diet...my surgery is a week from today.

However, i just wanted to reach out to you to provide some encouragement.  You are doing the right thing by taking care of yourself and your baby and not actively attempting to lose weight during the pregnancy.

Have you talked to your surgeon? If so, did he have any advice to offer? Or perhaps, your OB/GYN or PCP can offer some suggestions.

It is tough enough to lose the weight when everything is going right so I know that you have to be really struggling to maintain a positive outlook right now when it seems everything is out of your control.

Just remember to take 1 day at a time...if that doesn't work, try one hour at a time...get through this hour and then plan for the next.

If you need to reach out for a sympathetic ear, I am available and happy to give you my number so you can call me when you need encouragement.

Just remember that pregnancy only lasts 9 months...then you can resume your weight loss efforts.

I know the timing sucks but I believe that you can get through this with a real testimony to share with the others on the board.

Let me know if I can help...and I hope these few words have.

First of all congratulations! My main reason for this surgery is to try to have another child. I had my 1st one after a 60 lb weight loss, so I can kind of relate to how you feel. I felt like I was on such a good path and them I was pregnant and felt like it was all lost in vain. I only gained 16 lbs during pregnancy and lost it right away after  I gave birth. Hang in there. Once you see that healthy baby it will all be worth it.

How long did it take you before you got pregnant?? I was seven months out to the day...did you have issues with wanting to eat "cause you were pregnant" I feel like this is head hunger partly...and that i have stretched out my pouch and it is depressing...

Staying the course also means trusting what our bodies do during pregnancy. You think you out of control, but the pregnancy hormones are helping drive your hunger because that's what they should be doing. As you enter the second trimester, things will begin to level or you will get used to the added pushed to feed.

Week #14 brings on the nesting stage and an increase in energy. I'm sure even off the depression meds, that you will get some relief in a couple of weeks.

Fine out what the recommended weight gain is for your weight and height. Get track of your gains and try to keep them steady, but please remember that some gain is quite normal. You are growing a little person who comes equipped with quite a big house of fluid and other "baby stuff."

You can't look at what other post-bariatrics are doing because you need to add some extra nutrients for the baby. You can't look at what other 3 month pregnant folks are doing because you have some added nutrient loss because of your malabsorption.

Your body is simply craving what it needs in vitamins and key minerals. Finding vitamin rich foods without much extra "fluff" will help soften the punch of the cravings. Find ways to get your prenatals in and down and your body will pull you less toward extra items.

It sounds to me that you are really trying hard, but don't be too hard on yourself. Expectant motherhood is a tough, tough, tough job, but the fringe benefits are out of this world.

I was pregnant five times and the fifth time was the toughest, but most successful (We lost four). I was on a lot of bed rest and hospitalized. I went by the book, but ate all the extra snacks and small meals that were suggest to keep cravings at bay.

I was nearly 350 pounds at the start of the pregnancy and lost more than 50 pounds truly by accident. After the baby got all her rich nutrient-packed foods, I was still taking in less calories. We carefully watched my losses to make sure the loss wouldn't affect her brain and body development.

Three weeks early and 50 pounds down, I gave birth to a big beautiful nearly 9 pound girl. She is very tall, but has yet to be chubby.

I recommend keeping a food journal to track your nutrients -- not to cut back.

Here's two really good (and free) trackers with cool online food journals:

RealizeMySuccess -- this is for bariatric patients and open to bypass, sleeve and banding patients now. Go to RealizeMySuccess.com and it walks you through registration. If you surgeon isn't listed, PM me and I'll give you the access for our group. (I work for bariatric surgeons).

MyPyramid Tracker -- MyPyramid.gov is run by the USDA and has some good tools for getting your nutrients and analyzing your intake.

I struggled both with weight-related issues and difficult pregnancies. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. I know this isn't easy, but please know that when you gain only what you are recommended during pregnancy, it comes off very quickly.

Put the baby first and the Lord will take care of the mommy.

ONWARD .... All my best and CONGRATS!!!!

Frances

Frances...I want you to know since I first came here I have read just about everything you have posted...I was and have am blessed by your presence here...it is honestly one of the reasons I decided to join. thank you so very much for that....I still am feeling lost and I went to see my Nut. once...but left feeling like she was not much help..I will check out the sights you have mentioned..for me as a by pass patient I know there are some foods we are to avoid...they should make a pyramid for that...that would be much easier for me to "do" i suppose I will go and see Kate (nut.) I don't mind gaining as long as it IS a "healthy" gain just I eat things that are not good for me...and too much in a sitting...or I think..and wonder if I have stretched out my stomach...I do feel lost..and like I ruined this surgery for me....so I think now what....anyway thank you sooo much again you have no idea how much your post have helped me and seeing your faith...YOU ARE A BLESSING

Thinking of you, Kim, and your little bundle of joy. You are in a major challenge, but we do recover and recoup. Don't lose faith. I for one know that we don't have "one" big chance to start over or make major victories. This isn't your last chance to win or lose.

Do the best you can and you will be amazed at how the Lord will bless the efforts you are making. You are under a very high calling right now and I believe the rewards are as great as the sacrifices.

Take good care,
Frances
