Protein Trials are BLAH!

I have purchased several samples of some of the different protein meal replacements (powders) in order to get a sense of what I will like before my surgery on March 16th.  I am not a milk drinker, so the ones that are flavored are kinda foamy and well, milky.  The "unflavored" powder requires that I hold my nose to get it down even after mixing it with water and the crystal light because of an unusual vitaminy smell.  I know that I need to drink this stuff to get in the protein that I need, but are there any proteins out there that are truely, "undetectable"?

Has anyone tried the bariceuticals at
www.nutraqueen.com

I haven't seen any posts about it and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with these products?

P.S.  Isn't the Lake's support meeting this week?  If so, when and where (room number).

Whey protein has a very detectable taste.  I've tried the unflavored type but it still has that taste since it is a milk protein.  What I do is make protein cocoa with swiss mocha? diet cocoa to help over power the taste.  You have to be creative to stomach these shakes no matter what.  People tell me that the more expensive powders taste better but I stick with my cheap walmart whey protein.  Good luck with everything.

Hi honey!!  I personally like American Sport Nutrition's Tropical Banana whey. I mix it with about 4 oz of water and 1 scoop of protein powder and about 20 (yes 20**** cubes in a blender. Mix it really good and it will be smooth and creamy like a milk shake. I usually buy it from Paramount Supplements. It is the cheapest that I've found. I am almost 5 years out and have been using this one for at least 4.5 years!! Good luck.

I recommend that you go to Vitalady.com or Bariatriceating.com and shop around there for protein powders.  I know at Vitalady you can order samples.  I believe you can call BariatricEating and they will send samples as well.

I am a milk drinker and I have been drinking the same shake for three years and love it.  I use unsweetened Soy milk.

There are many many powders out there - if you like fruity flavors and not milky ones. There are iced tea protein powders, etc.  There are also lots and lots of sugar free syrups that lots of people use to give their drinks different flavors.  I must be very boring because I only drink the one kind and I never ever get tired of it.  I drink 2-4 a day and would drink more if I could.

Good luck with your surgery - it will be wonderful.

My shake consists of:
1 cup unsweetened Silk soy milk
1 heaping teaspoon of Hershey's unsweetened cocoa
1 shot of sugar free Amaretto syrup
3-4 frozen strawberries
ice cubes (about 8 - depends on you)
1 scoop of Isopure Natural Vanilla protein powder (it is zero carb and mixes wonderfully).  I get it at BariatricEating.com.  GNC also sells it and has good sales on it at times.

I put all the above ingredients into my blender and blend it up till nice and very thick and smooth like a Wendy's Frosty (no kidding).  I don't ever get tired of it.  However, I don't care for sweet fruity drinks.

You said you're looking for shake recipes/ideas.  I really recommend that you go to BariatricEating.com.  You will find everything you need as far as vitamins, protein powders, bars, ready-to-drink protein drinks, cooking sauces, snack foods, syrups, etc.  It is unbelievable.  They also have a wonderful support message board you can join.  There is also a section on shake recipes/ideas as well as lots and lots of wonderful recipes for us weight loss surgery people.  It's a great resource.  Check it out.

I'm three years post-op and would do it again tomorrow.  I wish you all the luck with your surgery and your journey.

If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

Kim,
I use Champion Nutrition Pure Whey Stack Cookies and Cream.  I just love it.  I mix 1 and 1/2 scoops of protein, 5 oz of water, 4 ice cubes, and SF syrup.  I blend in my Magic Bullet and pour into a glass with ice. I like my shakes real cold.  I drink 3 a day.  I have a Bullet at work and home.

Take care,

I love Unjury vanilla. Tried many different kinds too. Taste buds are very different after surgery...so what you can't stomach now might be better after surgery. It's all trial and error. Good luck!
