Post Date: 4/20/08 2:20 pm Last Edit: 4/20/08 2:20 pm 60 Minutes has scheduled a segment on gastric bypass surgery. Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports on the effects of gastric bypass surgery this Sunday, April 20, at 7 p.m. ET/PT. I just saw a commercial on this segment and it looks encouraging as far as being objective and fair. Hopefully this will be the beginning of sharing the benefits of weight loss surgeries to the public. Check it out: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/17/60minutes/main4023451.shtml Cathy

I'm sorry you missed it, friend. It was very, very well-done and encouraging. We are planning a summary of it for our new New U newsletter and I'll try to post a copy of it when it's written.
As a medical professional, you will find it particularly enlightening. It wasn't just another "gastric bypass is great or dangerous clip." Instead it focused on the aspect of diabetes remission. Because of the intestinal switching, RNY patients are given a bonus of immediate diabetes remission that may only be possible with the loss of significant weight in merely restrictive procedures.
It has me rethinking my personal stance on the RNY because I don't have the desire to be what is defined as "normal BMI," but I do want the advantages of possibly curing my diabetes. Recent developments in my family and personal health have shown me just how crucial this is for me.
Gosh, darn, well, that's two of the six paragraphs I've asked on the episode.
Take care,
Frances
