New Orleans after WLS
Hello Lovely Louisianans!
I'm just visiting here from PA, as I will be visiting New Orleans in a couple weeks. Last time I was there, many years ago, I ate a bit of everything the city had to offer. Now, I am 14 months post-op, gastric bypass, and nine pounds from my goal.
Of course I am not going to New Orleans for the food, but...let's face it...it's New Orleans and the food is awesome.
Any residents or regular visitors to that fine city have any suggestions for navigating the local menu? Where do you go? What do you eat? Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Lisa...from Philly
Hiya Lisa,
I was in New Orleans for a few days last month. If you recall the famous Chef Paul Prudomme (sp), you know he recently lost a great deal of weight himself. Our first meal there was his restaurant K-Pauls. I highly recommend it. The portions are reasonable and there's lots of dishes with colorful and healthy vegetable content.
Like most of the best foods, it's not buffet-meal prices. It's expensive and worth every bit of it.
I can also make some suggestions about places to avoid, but I would seem very hyprocritical if I explained why ....
I can suggest, however that you walk everywhere from the Riverwalk to the French Quarters -- at least you are getting plenty exercise.
Have a good visit,
Frances

Lisa,
I would recommend Drago's. The charbroiled oysters are wonderful. There are 2 Drago's, one in downtown New orleans at the Hilton and one in Metairie. Also, Mr. B's in the French Quarter is great. Brennan's in the French Quarter is also good. And also any of Emeril's restaurants are great such as Nola's and Emeril's.
I eat broiled fish and boiled shrimp. Both are low carb.
Have a great time in New Orleans.

Lisa-
They have a fabulous Crab Salad at Drago's BUT TRUST ME. Order Half order it is HUGE! I am 3 years post op, and I still can get some dumping from some of the oysters that have cheese. A word to the wise. We rate all of our restaurants on Bread, and they bring it to you here as well. You might want to tell them that you do not want it. They keep bringing it out and it is good. Call and make a reservation of you could wait a while in metaire, but I hear the one downtown is always empty. Email me if you want the phone #. Dragos is reasonably priced. Stay away from the raw oysters post op, unless you want to chew them, we have a problem with those and digestion. I heard this from my doc, and haven't tried to experiment though.
Emerils, Tommy's. Irene's, La Bocca, Nola's are all good choices but are pricey.
Irenes is my fav... Well Irenes and La Bocca. I eat at Emerils about once a week, my boyfriend loves it and lives close, so we frequent often when we are not traveling for work. If you head there on a weekend night, head over to Lucy's Surfer Bar after a few blocks down the street. This place is fun f it is kicking, if there is no crowd pass it up.
Here are some great less expensive meals...
There is a great place for po-boys in old metarie called Radosta's. it is on Aris Ave a few blocks of metairie road. They serve sweet potatoe fries, yes they are cooked in oil, but they are fabulous, be careful though too many and you know..

Breakfast .... Surrey's Juice Bar.. Fabulous breakfast and fresh juices. The iced coffee is wonderful. Some of the omlets have crab and shrimp in them, they are wonderful. Be careful of the richness though, they will alter if you ask. Very nice people. The iced coffee here is great. I barely have to sweeten it. 1418 magazine 504-524-3828. A MUST FOR BREAKFAST. Love this place, but call they are closed on Mondays I believe.
Shogun on Veterans in Metairie has very very inexpensive lunch specials they start at under 7 dollars and come with soup and bean sprout salad. This is not the chain shogun at all. The sushi is always fresh. I love the sprout salad. I could eat it all the time. You get a lot of food and it is good. I usually get the chicken and beef terrayki at lunch. But they have a shogun special at dinner that comes with lobster, chicken steak for 19.95 with soup and salad. This would take me a week to eat alone! If you are down town check out Roc n Sake, they are in the warehouse district they are good too.
Pizza--- well..... I love Reginelli's there is one in almost every neighborhood and I always get the Sun pie and add double chicken. It is great they have good salads and are fairly reasonable for what you get. It is a local chain, They deliver too, so if you are taking it easy one night this is a great option.
Sun Rae grill has great salads and they are located through out the city.
My absolute favorate salad in the city, NO QUESTIONS. Is at Cafe Rani, it is on Magazine, I have never eaten anything bad here. I love this place it is fabulous. I always get the Bluesy Chicken Salad. It is big too, They have an Eggplant Appetiser that is wonderful too, I have them put grilled chicken in it and eat it as a meal sometimes It is big but soo delicious. You can eat outside here if it is a pretty day 2719 magazine 504-895-2500
My top choices for you would be PARKWAY, Surreys and Cafe Rani. You have to go to Parkway.
Thanks for visiting. We are glad you are coming!
Have a great time. And don't forget to ask for 1/2 portions, most of the places will serve HUGE portion sizes, It is cheaper too. I take home leftovers all the time and eat off of them for days if I forget to tell them!!!
NOLA PROUD.
