My employer is changing our insurance carrier to Humana/ChoiceCare PPO in January.  Does anyone have any info on their obesity surgery requirements and how easy they are to deal with? Thanks in advance for any info!  :-) T

I have Tricare which is military insurance so they contract out to Humana but our plan is Humana Military. If it is the same company they were a breeze to deal with on getting approved and had great coverage.

Thanks for the info!  I heard "we are changing insurance carriers" and I was imagining the worst.  My company is obesity surgery friendly so they are going to have the rider included with the new insurance plan as it was in the previous insurance plan but each insurance company can require different qualifiers to be approved.  (whew...that was a mouthful :-))  So just hearing that they CAN be easy to deal with makes me feel better. Thanks again! T

I work for a division of Ochsner and we had Humana before 2006 and they did not cover the surgery but it was an exclusion with my company but in 2007 my company switched to Humana/Ochsner emp. and they covered the surgery, there was no problems and no waiting, it was a breeze. Roz

Wait until you see your company's plan. Your coverage will depend on what your employer picks with Humana. For Ochsner employees who have Humana, you have to be employeed for 1 year and have a $5,000 copay.

I had Humana at the time of my surgery and they were real a$$h0les to deal with since my employers policy had an exclusion for weight loss surgeries. I ended up paying cash because they continuously denied me with no chance of even an argument.

I have Humana PPO through North Oaks in Hammond (well i'm on my mom's plan) and I have been in contact with the Humana bariatric team and they said that our policy covers up to 20,000 dollars of gastric bypass surgery only with 6-12 mths or something of physician assisted dieting, so if that helps I don't know, i'm still wanting to know the same thing: has Humana given anyone hope around here? haha
