Duodena Switch or RNY
I am doing research on which type of surgery I think is going to be best for me. I would like to hear what RNY'ers and Duodena Switch'ers about why they choose the surgery that they did.
I work for the state which currently has a total exclusion on assisting with any type of weight control measures. I was told by the office of a WL surgeon that in about 18 months that the state insurances will be covering WLS.
So this is what I want to know.
Why did you choose the type of surgery you had or are interested in having?
Duodenal Switch or RNY
Thanking you in advance for your comments.
Originally I wanted a lapband, but when I called my insurance company, UnitedHealth Care, I was told they only cover RNY. Then after I talked to my surgeon, he recommened the RNY. I don't think I gave any thought to the duodenal switch.
You should take this time to research both. Go to the forums on both surgeries to learn as much as you can, then you will be able to make an educated choice for yourself.
Good luck
Thanks for the reply. That is what I am doing. It seems that I am going to have plenty of time to make that decision. I have researched Duodenal Switch vs RNY and find a number of differences.
My regular insurance doesn't cover anything right now. If they ever do (I know that a committee has been appointed by the legislature to complete a study and make a recommendation regarding requiring all insurances in the state cover WLS) I also have medicare which will cover the LapBand and both Duodenal Switch and RNY. In the mean time I am reading everything I can get my hands (or computer) on regarding all of these options.
Just looking for input. At this point I am really looking hard at DS. It seems to better suited for people with my BMI and age. You loose slower but then I am not going anywhere fast anyway.
Again, thanks for your reply.
I was also considering Lap Band then switched to RNY. which i will have done on April 30th. From my understanding the DS is for very very obese patients. It is more mal absorbive than the RNY. And it is a longer more complicated surgery. In your research you willl see that you have to take alot more vitamins after surgery when doing the DS. I would go to the DS forum and ask around there as well. They will be able to give you their experiences with it and if they would do it again and why they chose it over RNY or Lapband.
Good Luck to you.. And cool beans that the state will soon have coverage of WLS.
Take Care,
Michele
