I am going on main forum too with these questions but need some anwsers. 1. I am over a year out and wanted to know if you all are still doing the protein? My doc has never made drinking protein an issue. 2. Does anyone ever get the shakes? My hands start shaking and when I eat a little something it goes away. Is this normal? thanks denise

#2. I haven't been banded yet but i do have the problem of shakes when my blood sugar gets low. Maybe you are not eating enough.

Experts vary on their advice, but our bodies need protein -- even before wls. Some patients stop drinking protein supplements if they can get adequate protein from solid meals. Even some RNY folks don't drink their protein after the healing stages. I'm very cautious of how much protein I need -- it's not one of those "the more, the merrier" type things. Getting too much isn't a good thing and might add too many calories. I keep a running total in my head of my protein grams. I'm usually shooting for 60-80 grams, but they are seldomly protein drinks. On No. 2, if I get the shakes, my blood sugar could be very low. That's why it's good to get some complex carbs everyday. The body needs that too. I wish you well, Denise. Onward! Frances

Denise, I am 2 years out from surgery. I drink 2 or 3 protein shakes a day and I will drink them forever. This is my opinion only, but I think that drinking the shakes helps keep me from gaining weight. I never feel hunger and I think the shakes are the reason. I make them with water and ice, no milk. I do get the shakes when I haven't eaten in awhile. I just eat a few peanuts or almonds and I feel better. Lynn J., lap RNY 9/29/04 5'4" 306/146/135

Hey, Denise! Can you believe it's been one year already? I have my anniversary on october 25th! Wahoo!!! As for protien, I have found myself slipping back into old habits of eating the quick carbs so I'm in the process of nipping that in the bud!!! Tomorrow is grocery day again and I'm planning on buying lots of protien and hiding it all on my kids somewhere in the fridge where they can't find it! Shakes? S-h-a-k-e-s, yes I have had them a couple of times and I don't like them. Like you, when I eat something they go away. Someone on here said that it sounded like low blood sugar. I'm planning on asking my surgeon on Wednesday. This happens mostly around PMS time. Have you ever had your heart do a weird beat? Like my heartbeat got stuck in motion. I've had that happen a couple of times and that kind of scares me. It happened on two occasions. Once when I was doing housework and the other time was when I was pulling up carpet tack strips from the small den floor. I sat down and they eventually went away. I'm gonna definitely ask my surgeon about this one!!! Anyhow, congratulations on making it past one year! We've come a long way, babe!!! Ain't life grand? Peggy B.

hi denise, that has happened to me before, mostly when it does, its because i ate something with high carbs , or sugar, and i think what happens is the sugar goes real high then i dump, (not meaning bathroom) then the sugar level goes real low, so you have to eat something else to get it back to normal, i know this is the case with me, because i checked my sugar when this is going on and it is below 70, normal is 70-120 . if you can buy a cheap machine from the drug store, you could check yours, getting to low can be serious, so check it out... rhonda
