Question about low fat cream soups and other things

Can you blend them to puree the chunks of broccoli or whatever or do you have to strain them. For example I LOVE Campbell's 98% fat free clam chowder, which of course has nice chunks of potatoes and clams in it, so would I be able to eat it if I pureed it? I started the liquid diet today. I am very pleased that the sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast shake tasted really good, almost like NesQuik. However, the commissary and the Walmart in town don't carry it in vanilla. Does anyone know which grocery stores might carry it? I'm going to look in the Albertson's and Kroger in Alexandria on Tuesday after we drop our dog off at the kennel. I bought some chocolate and vanilla protein shake samples from Unjury. Do they taste similiar to the Carnation shakes? I haven't worked up the nerve to try one yet. I am silly like that. I told my hubby I'd make one and make him taste it first. LOL. Thanks!

A few things: Make sure that you are in the "full liquid" stage before starting "blended soups." Everyone is different, but many of us start on clear liquids before full and then mushies. Taking a chunky soup and blending it until it's smooth is a great way to get some good nutrition in that stage. Nice, hot soup -- favor, yum.. you will see. CIB is really good, but NesQuik makes a sugar free chocolate Quick that when mixed with skim milk does a good job on riveling CIB's nutritional content. Cool thing about SF Quick or CIB and milk is that it can be "piping hot." Again, you will see, but most of the protein products turn into ALIEN MONSTER when heated. I like the comfort of having a hot meal even if its a liquid meal. Most of all, mix it up so you don't get bored with meals or just dread them -- like a diet. I've tried Unjury and it's not too bad, but the "taste" is there. You might try instant coffee and peanut butter in your shakes when you are on full liquids. Unjury has a super flavor called Strawberry Sorbet which is good in sf juice or with crushed fruit and water. The chocolate and vanilla was SOS to me. Good luck...Onward! Frances

Thanks for the info. I'm still pre-op, surgery is in 5 days. I'll keep your advice about starting the soups when I get to that stage. What does SOS mean? Is the "taste" like a chalky type taste?

Same old s**it...sorry. The tastes is an odd after taste and not just chalky consistency. I'll be thinking about you in five days. Let me know if there's anything you need. Onward! Frances

That's what I thought you meant by SOS, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts.

I tried the chocolate Unjury shake this morning. I'm still drinking it as I sit in front of computer. I mixed it in my Magic Bullet blender and it made it too foamy, so I had to put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes. I hear ya on the after taste, but the shake itself isn't too bad. I'll try the vanilla one tomorrow. I didn't order a sample of the unflavored one or strawberry sorbet and now wish I had.

I have some sample packets of unflavored and the ones you have already. I don't think they put strawberry sorbet in sample packs. I can send you the unopened samples I have. Let me know...I could probably get it to you before your surgery. Frances

That would be wonderful! Thank you so much Frances! I'm leaving for Lake Charles tomorrow and won't be home until after my surgery. How can I get my mailing info to you?

Hi, Jessica. Wow, surgery is right around the corner -- how exciting! As Frances mentioned, every surgeon is different in their requirements. However, if you've been instructed to watch your carbs, you might want to be careful about those creamy soups, especially fat-free or low-fat. Typically, FF/LF foods have added starch (i.e., carbs) to make up for the lack of fat. Potatoes are also a big no-no on low carb diets, regardless of consistency. That said (and given that you have a Magic Bullet), few would see anything wrong with blending and microwaving some LF milk, Old Bay seasoning, a tiny bit of liquid smoke or bacon bits, melted LF white cheese (swiss/mozz), and canned clams. Perhaps you could add a very small amount of cornstarch for thickening and a scoop of unflavored protein powder for nutritional value. Good luck!

Low-fat cream soups are on my list of semi-solid foods I can eat after surgery and now. I was on the Atkins diet, but now that I'm on the liquid/semi-solid diet and I've noticed almost everthing I can eat has carbs in it. I'm still losing weight, so I'm not worried about the carbs.
