In my experiences I would say stay away from bread. First it swells when you eat it and you won't be able to eat anything else. Second it gets stuck. I'm almost a year out and still can't handle bread. It hurts when I eat it, it seems like it gets stuck and is painfully. The only way I will eat it is toasted that is the only way it doesn't hurt. But I believe that said that pita bread is the best if you have to eat it. It's not processed and doesn't have bleaching agents added. That is the only bread I remember the dietitian telling me it was okay to eat, and I have tried it and it didn't hurt and it didn't get stuck. But I can only eat a couple of bites of it before I feel bloated. So I stick to eating my meats first. To get fiber I eat broccoli and leafy greens they have more than bread anyway. I was worried about not getting enough fiber because I didn't eat bread and the doctor told me not to he said bread doesn't have enough fiber to make a difference just eat lots of veggies to get your fiber. hey tracy.....i'm 8 months out and can eat bread. i prefer it toasted and put lite butter and sugar free jam on it. also, i can eat about a half of a sandwich without any problems. and must admit, the kids and i went to ryans a few weeks back and i ate half of a roll there. so, needless to say, i can eat it without an probs!

There are some good bread options out there that can make the investment worth while in what they offer in fiber and protein content. I buy Nature's Own Lite in Honey Wheat when I can find it. I eat it rarely, but this is a good choice for my entire family, so it's what's available and it tastes great. It is whole grain with only 80 calories a serving -- two slices and that's about half of what most postops can eat; so about 40 calories. A serving gives you 5 grams of fiber -- awesome, but it also offers 5 grams of protein and only 1 gram of natural sugar for two slices. So less than a gram if you eat half a serving. This is what I use to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my preschooler and I'm thinking of having a sandwich today. Earlier in my progression, I would only be able to do it toasted, but after two years, I can do some non-toasted bread. I buy this bread in regular stores like Wal Mart, Walgreens, etc. There are some other options out there and I hope you find something that works for you. My criteria for whole grain items is that they be low in sugar and offer both fiber and protein. Good luck, Frances

I agree. That is the type of bread that I use, as well. It works especially well if you toast it first.

Hi Marcie I just finished the sandwich. Yummy. I added more protein with cheese and more fiber with about a quarter avocado. It had thin slices of ham and smoked turkey and moistened with spicy brown mustard (zero calories!). A sandwich can be healthy and it's definitely filling. I just had an unfill because of swelling in my esophagus, but the feeling of advanced satiety has been reached. Have a good week! Frances

Hey Frances! How are you? It's uncanny how many similarities the two procedures will incur. I also eat my sandwich with spicy brown mustard and thin sliced ham. I can do the honey ham, but not the smoked ham....not sure why. Cheese causes too much gas, though, so I skip that. Great tip about the avocado. Never thought of it. I am up to 1/2 a sandwich at a time, but I can usually eat the other half a few hours later. I am 10 months and down to 108 pounds! Loving life and my sandwiches! I LOVE hummus on toast or pita bread, too. That is the only way that I can eat bread, though.

Congrats on the awesome weight loss! I have another suggestion -- flavored wraps. Not often, but I occassionally make wraps out of Missions flavored wraps available at WalMart. My two favorites are sun-dried tomato and garlic and herb...or spinach and garden herb...OK, I have three favs. These are a little more costly calorie wise than bread, but they don't cause that bloated, crampy feeling as they sit in the pouch. No poof -- no problem. My wraps of choice are grilled chicken avocado or tuna avocado. After rolling the wrap, I "press" it in a sprayed pan until crispy. The avocado is well worth the investment in healthy fats and calories because of the uber-nutrients and fiber. And the creamy consistency makes things like fatty mayo unneeded. We must chat or do lunch when I'm in the Lake city -- it's my home. Onward! Frances

I love to take the wrap and spread reduced fat peanut butter on it and roll it up! Yum! Yum! Peggy B.

Sounds great! There is a place here in town called Roly Poly that has wraps. We can do lunch there, perhaps! And, thanks about the weight loss. I am pretty ecstatic about it. Most importantly, though, the diabetes and hypertension are a distant memory. I can even remember feeling as badly as I did. I have an entirely new life and I love being able to share that with others daily. Call me if you're in the area! Our office number forwards to my cell after hours for 14 hour coverage. I'm never too far away. 337-433-1303. By the way - your new pics are fantastic! I must figure out how to upload some of my own!
