Fluids extremely important/wild day
My youngest son had his football jamboree today. All was well except it was extremely hot outside. The boys did great, however the very last play one of our team members made a tackle and landed on his arm wrong. Very obvious, that it was broken. They called the fire department and he was taken away by ambulance. As the game finished and the coach was talking with the boys. I all of a sudden started to feel like I was going to pass out. I told my husband that I felt real funny so he suggested we go to the truck. He was walking me to the truck and I really started to feel wierd (best way to describe it) we happened to walk past the fire truck and he said he felt like I needed to be checked out. I said no way I am fine just need airconditioning. We walked to a shade tree and he told me to sit on the curb he would run to the truck. I sat down and all of a sudden my fingers started to tingle. By the time he got the truck to me I could not feel my hands. I had severe cramps in my hands and had no feeling. Of course I got scared!!!! By this time the firetruck had left. He put me in the truck and ran to get our son. He told me he was taking me to the ER. It was about a mile from the football field. Well, I guess I got scared and started to hyperventalate. By the time we got to the ER I could not catch my breath. The more things happened the more scared I got. What a freaky feeling. They took me in by wheelchair and started me on fluids, oxygen and did labs and an ekg. I was there for about 3 hours and started to feel much better.
Well, basically I dehydrated. When I started having the tingling in my fingers and they started to cramp I became scared and started hyperventalating. Lesson learned, drink extra fluids prior to going out in the heat. I drank a great deal while I was out but it was not enough when it is 100 degrees outside. This morning I weight 137 when I got home from the hospital I slipped into my pj's and weighed I was down to 134 and that was with getting fluids in the hospital.
Also the poor boy, was next to me in the ER. He had two breaks in his arm and dislocated another bone. They had to take him into surgery, I could hear everything the doctor said. he will have several pins. A very severe break. No more football for him and he was our best player.
Sorry this is long, but I now know how important it is to drink and how easy we can dehydrate....so when going out in the heat make sure you have had plenty to drink prior to going out and drink extra while out.
Hugs,
Jodi
Hey Frances,
I can say I learned a valuable lesson, fluids and lots of fluids BEFORE going out. I had plenty during the day but really nothing before hand. We still have plenty of heat for the next few weeks. Hubby says I can't go to the games until it cools off some. Like heck gotta see my babies play....I will just drink extra the day before and prior to going.
My heart goes out to the boy, it broke my heart listening to him yesterday. He was in so much pain and even with the pain meds. I hope he is doing better this morning.
Take care,
Jodi
Hey Jodi, I'm sorry you went through all that, but I'm very glad there was nothing too serious! When I saw tingling, I'm thinking, oh **** I know she didn't have a stroke or something!!! Yea, this heat is a killer, especially with all the humidity!
My kids try to get me to drink gatorade, but yucky, i don't like it! But I have been putting away a lot of water these days!!!
I'm glad your okay now!!!
Hi Christie,
I didn't know what was going on, it scared the hell out of me that much I know. I can usually deal with the heat so this really blew me away. I have really been drinking my water today especially since my other son had his game tonight. It was nice out tonight very cloudy and comfortable.
Take care,
Jodi
