Started my Liquid Diet
Dr. Chung put me on the Atkins diet. Lunch and dinner will be easy, but what else besides eggs can I have for breakfast? Maybe I should look into protein shakes, since that's what I'll be drinking after surgery. All I know is that in the past things like Carnation Instant Breakast and Slimfast made me gag because they tasted chalky to me.
I hope your diet gets easier for you.
I haven't eaten eggs since I was a teen, and I totally know how you feel about breakfast selections! But here's something I have enjoyed when I was on Atkins, and still enjoy to this day.
Cook up some veggie sausage (Morningstar Farms is excellent), ideally patties, but you can also use breakfast links (split them open) or even large slices of whatever sausage style you like. You can do this with "real" sausage, but the size portion you're going to want means you'll be consuming a whole LOT of fat and calories. (According to Atkins, it's OK once in a while, but not every day.) Top each patty with a little bit of sauteed onion (if you wish) and a generous helping of your cheese of choice, and let it get nice and melted. Enjoy on a plate, with a fork, no bread required. Yum!
I just remembered another favorite: cook up some veggie or turkey bacon until it's crisp on the edges, but still flexible. Roll it up with your favorite cream cheese/spread and enjoy.
And to drink with your breakfast: put some milk (maybe a splash of cream or half-and-half**** Splenda, and Crystal Light fake orange juice in the blender for a fake Orange Julius.
Bon Appetit!
Hi, Tracy. Check out http://www.teklawgirl.biz/Liquid_diet_recipes.htm for some creative ways to break the monotony of protein drinks. Be aware that you won't be able to use some of these ideas because they might be too high in carbs, especially if they involve fruit or pudding mix (at least for my surgeon's practice, extremely low-carb was the key before surgery in order to shrink my waist and liver, whereas after surgery, the important thing was consistency and protein content, where a little bit of carbs would be acceptable).
I think I may have mentioned this before, but what saved me during the pre-op liquid diet was "protein soup" made by mixing unflavored protein powder into a low-carb soup.
Enjoy, and good luck!
