I am so very puzzled. I had surgery on Monday. I haven't wanted to eat at all. Not to mention all of the protein I tried before now tastes like paste. The wonderful soups I found before aren't so wonderful. Eating in general has lost it appeal. I keep sipping water all day long and I get in my vitamins, but the protein is a problem. Everything smells horrible and tastes about the same. What's a body to do???? What am I doing wrong. I can't even finish a cup of sugar free jello. The only thing that I have managed to finish is a sugar free popsicle. What with the funny taste I have.

Hey girl...first of all I'm glad you made through without any problems!! I can so relate to how you feel. I had my surgery on a monday was home on wednesday BUT before I left the hospital I had to sip on chicken broth and juice and had to eat a popsicle. I'm two days shy of being six months post op and most days I still have no taste or want food! Don't try to finish a cup of jello, that is way too much way too soon in my opinion. Go to walmart or the dollar store and get you some of the little 3 ounce plastic cups that you would use in the bathroom. Those were some little life savers for me for several months after surgery. I was told to do two ounces every 15 minutes. To me it was easier to do it in smaller portions like that. Protein still isn't one of my favorites but you have got to do it! Although, I have read some profiles where people never drank protein...so I don't know for sure....but I know my doctor/dietician stresses get the protein in!!! Since your not even a week out yet, I think it would probably be ok to wait a few more days or even a week before you start the protein. Your body is going through changes and as long as you are getting fluids in and your vitamins, I personally think you will be ok if you wait another week. I loved my sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles and the fudgesicles even had two grams of protein....can't beat that, LOL! One thing that is pricey but good is the gladiator protein from Smoothie King. It has 45 grams of protein per serving. I personally used a lot of the protein from walmart, the price is reasonable and it has 20 grams of protein per serving. It's called Body Fortress its whey protein. I hope this helps you a little......just keep getting those fluids in!!! Christie 340/235/170

Thanks so much. I tried the gladiator before surgery, but this week is clear liquids. I wasn't trying to finish the jello in one sitting it has taken me from wed. to today and I still haven't finished it. But I will try not to worry so about the protein right now and just stay hydrated. Very helpful.

Bejai, Hey CONGRATULATIONS on your new journey to LOSING. I had my surgery 16 days ago and I certainly felt what you were feeling not too long ago. The first week home I couldnt have any protein drinks, nor did I want any. I had sf popsicles and jello and lots of water, and YES the key to the liquids is sip, sip, sip ALL day long. I found after a week or 10 days I certainly was getting my water in and began the protein drinks. I can only do that for the time being because even though I should have progressed to pureed, I find that my stomach cannot take it. I think it will pass, it just takes time. Let me know if I can help in any other way !! Stephanie

Hi Beija! I've called ya and I'm going to try to get you something that tastes better. That yucky tastes and feeling does get better, but I know it doesn't seem like it right now. Hang in there! Frances

Thanks Frances. I don't think anything will be better right now. I am going to sip alot of water and crytal light and Work on the protein next week when I move up on my food list. Funny thing the isopure wasn't so bad in my pre-surgery testing, but boy oh boy is it nasty now. Nothing tastes good excep****er. I know this will get better soon, just wondering if I am unique or this is the norm for most.. I will follow your advice and hang in there.

The only thing I wanted after my surgery was water. I had a very strict post op diet and did 1 ounce of fluid every 30 minutes. I was told to rotate between fruit juice and water. I diluted the juice cause it was way to sweet. I also had to set the timer on my microwave because I just was not hungry. I didn't start on protein until I was two weeks out and then it took time to work my way up to the amount they recommend. Don't stress about this you are still very early out. Your intake will increase and you will find protein that you like. I started off with Carnation instant breakfast sugar free and non fat dry milk. This was the only protein I could tolerate after surgery. Now I look forward to my protein drink and can do just about any. Jodi

Hey, Bejai! I know what you mean, I went through the same thing. It is normal. Your tastes will change back, in time, takes a little bit tho, I want to say about 3 or 4 weeks. Just try to get the water in now, the protein will come later. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. As long as you are getting in your vitamins right now, you are doing good!! You are not even a week out yet, give yourself a little time to heal and your body time to catch up. I bet by the time you start on soft foods you will be able to eat a little bit. Call me if you need to talk. Cindee
