Has anyone ever spit up blood while dumping?

I am three weeks out today. I have not had any problems until now. This morning I drank a little Isopure going to work and then I ate a few thin slices of roast beef, that was around 7:30. About 10:30 I thought I would have a little EAS protein dring, I had one yesterday and it was okay. Well I took a few sips and before I knew it I felt like I was going to die. When I finally had it come up all it was was liquid, phlem consistancy, but I felt better. Around 2:00 I ate a tropical SF pop icicle, kind of red color. At 5:00 I ate refried beans and immediately started feeling bad. When that came up and after I was spitting red stuff. Could it have been from the po icicle? what do you think? I am going to call my surgeon but wanted your ideas. Thanks

That is soooo strange that you post this today! I did that last night for the first time ever. I am 8 months postop from RNY. I had about 2 ounces of a meatball sandwich from Subway (mostly meatball, little bread) and for some reason, I started dumping. I was nauseated, sweating and my heart literally felt like it would jump through my chest wall and out onto the floor. I kept feeling as if I needed to vomit, but nothing would come up. Finally, after lying on the cold tile floor for about 10 minutes, I felt as though something would come up. I went to the bathroom and all that came out was mucous followed by bright, red blood. I panicked, I'll admit. My first thought was - oh my gosh...a perforated ulcer. But, I think I just broke a few of the tiny blood vessels in my esophagus with all the dry heaving. Call your doc, though, just to be on the safe side. Hope you feel better.

Thanks Marcie for your reply. It has put me at ease a little bit. My first instinct was to panic. But my husband seems to think it may have been the pop cicle. I am going to call Dr. Richardson, just trying to decide if I should do it tonight or wait until in the morning. I feel fine now and am kind of hungry but I am afraid to eat. Thanks again

As a Bariatric Coordinator, I can tell you that it is fine to try to eat again. If you develop chest pains or pain that radiates to the shoulder, go to the ER immediately. Also, be aware of any fever or rapid heartrate. You may want to stay on liquids or soft foods for the next 24 hours just in case it is pouch irritation. Try to stay away from red foods so that if you do see red again, you can confirm that it is, in fact, blood. If you see it again, call Dr. Richardson in the morning. And of course, if you are worried about it in the meantime, call his office. I'm sure he'd rather answer the call than to have you worry all night!

I can't really give you advice since your only three weeks out because I was on a liquid diet for six full weeks, then after that still wasnt eating any type of meats. At that time (six weeks post op) i moved on to mashed potatoes, soft foods, scrambled eggs. I'm now five months post op and try everything. I really didn't start trying different things though until about 10 weeks post op. My opinion, I'd say it's too early for you to eat those things or you could just be suffering from a virus. My dietician and doc has his patients following really strict diet plans. Anyway....I do hope you get to feeling better soon!

Christie...I think I really just ate too much too fast. I just saw my doctor Monday and was told I could eat meats as long as it was really really thin or ground up. I had eaten it yesterday also. I don't know how you did it that long. I was about to die for something to chew, but I guess I didn't chew chew enough. You are doing great and can't wait to see the new pictures of you since you hit the 101 lb mark. Thanks for your reply, they really help during this major life change.

Hi Darla, My guess would be that it was the popsicle. Since our pouches are so small the juice from the popsicle really didn't have anything to dilute with. You know with some tests where you are on liquids they tell you to avoid red drinks and jello because of the dye and it being confused with blood. I was on liquids for the first six weeks and I would suggest taking the next day or two and consume liquids. The roast beef may be to hard on your pouch. I still am not suppose to have beef and I am 7 months out. I do have it sometimes but not until I was a good 5-6 months out. My surgeons post op diet is one of the strictest that I have seen. When you have concerns your best bet is to get in contact with your surgeon. Afterall he is the one with the experience and the schooling behind him. I just like to think I know it all...

Hey Jodi, Thanks for your reply. I am going to call Dr Richardson in the morning, just to check with him to make sure I'm okay. I don't know how you and Christie did the 6 week liquid diet. I had the thin roast beef yesterday evening and it was fine. Thinking back I think I may have just eaten too much too fast. Your seven month pictures are great, you are really do well. darla

Okay so someone tell me -- I havent had any vomiting, as of yet but I am only 12 days post op -- DUMPING is throwing up? I had some soup this weekend and I had severe abdominal pain and felt weak and hot and it felt as if I were going to pass out -- clammy -- is that a sign of dumping????
