Liquid Diet before surgery????

Hi! I've been reading quite a few posts that mention having a liquid diet before surgery. I have a few questions about that....first, I am not approved yet, my paperwork is still making its way through the maze that is insurance bureaucratic red tape, but my surgeon wants me to lose 20 pounds before surgery. Now, since I have not a clue as to when my surgery might be (it's all depending on that magical eight-letter word!! "APPROVED!") I am trying very hard to jus****ch caloric intake, increase activity, etc, etc, etc. You know, all that stuff that, if I could have done it before, I wouldn't be needing surgery now!!! I am wondering if maybe trying the liquid diet for a while would be a good thing for me to do to try to lose those pre-surgery 20 pounds. Any input and/or suggestions on exactly what a "liquid diet" entails? I'd love a copy of someone's or at least a suggestion as to where I can find one! Thanks!

hi chris. i just had surgery 8 weeks ago. my surgeon alos required i loose some before surgery. i mostly followed a low carb diet lots of meat and salad. i had to do a 2 week liquid diet before surgery. the first week was full liquids, the second week which was the week before surgery was clear liquids. sugar free jello, popsicles, broth, i would get chicken noodle soup and strain it and drink the juice from it. i drank lots of apple juice also. i did drink skim milk a few times that week also. the week that i could have full liquids, i drank slim fast, i had sugar free pudding, sugar free yogurt, gumbo juice, milk, really any sugar free liquids was ok. good luck with the diet. i only lost 15 pounds before sugery but he was ok with that ......... kateri

Hey Christina. Sorry to get all "coordinator" on you, as I am really only here as a patient, but I had to answer this one. DON'T go on the liquid diet this soon before surgery. I lost 12 just prior to surgery by going on Atkins for two weeksfollowed by liquid for the week prior to surgery. So, you can lose the 20 quite easily. Start the Atkin's (high protein) diet now. It will help you to bulk up on protein prior to surgery, as it tends to be a little difficult to take in protein initially. If you start liquids now, your body will just drop it's metabolism to counteract the low caloric intake. Plus, you'll get weak and cranky and be no fun to deal with!! Just stick to the rule of nothing white - no bread, pasta, rice or sugar. If it tastes good - spit it out Talk to you very soon, I hope!

Thanks Marcie!! I am actually kinda glad you went all "coordinator" on me, as you put it!!! It feels good to know that Dr. Chung's office (meaning you!!) actually pays attention to the board and questions that we're asking! I am anxiously awaiting news on insurance approval, and am trying to be very good with the diet! Again, thanks for taking the time to answer my question!!!
