Patients of Dr. Barnes, I have a question about the diet

I have zero intention of cheating. EVER. I'm just curious what the food progression is like. I've totally forgotten. I know that next week I go to all liquids -- soupy potatoes, etc. What's next? For anyone, once you went from liquids to solids, were you afraid? I'm worried wht it'll be like to have to stop at one bite of something, etc. Though I know I can do it.

Lin: Dr. Shapiro did my surgery and my food progression was clear liquids the first week home, then full liquids the next two weeks. After that it was pureed foods for a month, soft textured food the third month, then regular textured food as tolerated after that. When I went from liquids to solids, I filled up so fast that stopping wasn't a problem. Now, it is a problem, because I never feel full until an hour or so after I've eaten, so I have to continually stop myself when eating because I know I'll pay for it later if I don't. I wasn't afraid of going to solids, in fact, I was really looking forward to chewing again. Hope this helps. Cathy

I am wondering the same thing. I had bypass on June 1st and as of this morining I have already lost 19 pounds. I am wondering if that weight loss is to fast. I did experience nausea right after surgery and after seeing Dr. Barnes in the er and heavy nausea meds I am feeling better every day. It is good to know that I finally found another patient of dr barnes.

Cathy ~ Thanks for the info. I haven't been to the commissary in ages. We were going to go today to pick up some milk and I was going to look for you but my son had other ideas. Stubborn two year olds, ya know!! I'll be in soon, I'm sure. Monday I get the go ahead to eat liquids so I'll need to stock up on stuff.

Hey Lin, I was a bit afraid of moving on to solids because I had such a problem with the pureed stage. I'd fill up for hours and not be able to drink my water and get my liquid in. However, I found out that I had a bit of a stricture and had that taken care of two weeks ago. Now, solid is not a problem and I'm enjoying being able to eat real food again. My weightloss had actually stopped for a few weeks, or stalled at least. I think it was because I wasn't getting enough calories and protein in. Now that I can eat "normal" foods, my weightloss has started back again. I wouldn't be scared, but I would proceed with caution..........and dont forget to keep a food diary of what works and doesn't. It can be a big help in the future. For instance, you might have ground beef one day and it's fine, then another time you have ground beef and cheese and that doesn't work so well.........having the diary helps you keep track. Just an idea................good luck.

Lin, when I went to solids I had no problem with eating to much. I could take a bite or two and that was it. My biggest problem was learning to eat slow. If I ate to fast I would feel sick. Alot of this is just a learning process. You will do fine. Jodi

I am a patient of Dr Jims too, had surgery last october and down 67 pds, i am revision and it comes off me slower. I did cheat, i will be very honest and if I ate something too soon that i shouldnt i would feel it. My tummy would hurt so bad for about an hour and half and then i would feel better. Your body will let you know if you eat too much, well at least mine did. Try to go by what he says and dont be afraid to call office and ask questions the girls in the office are great, two of them had the surgery themselves so very informative. Good luck Denise 250-183-150
