Cheating Dumpers? Dumping Cheaters?
When I met with my surgeon, I requested RNY, but now I'm wondering about whether I'll "miss" sweets forever. I enjoy cooking and baking, and of course, you can't make everything dairy-free and with Splenda. So will I EVER be able to sample one bite of cheesecake or one spoonful of apple cobbler? Will I EVER be able to eat a little crawfish bisque or have a little sour cream with my quesadilla? I understand that's the kind of thing that depends on the presence and intensity of dumping, which varies from person to person. I was just wondering if dumping syndrome has a threshold -- like, you'll dump on a Hershey's bar, but not on a Hershey's Kiss -- or if it ever diminishes or goes away. TIA for your advice!
You will be able to have those things eventually. I am 13 month's out and I eat two bites of cheesecake on occasion. Actually, I've done it once. However, I don't miss sweets. I think basically what happens is you detox your body and you no longer crave those foods. By detox I mean...you go so long without it you no longer crave it. I eat boiled crawfish, I'm cajun! I also eat sour cream with no problem. I believe the key to being successful is not depriving yourself of everything. I can basically eat anything but, if I know it's not a good choice I only allow myself a bite or two and I'm completley satisifed.
Someone in my support group put it great. He said he knows 6 M&M's are safe but, if he eats that 7th one he knows he'll dump however, sometimes he just takes that risk. There are some foods that wont agree with you after RNY. One for me is fajitia meat. I love it but, my pouch just can't handle it.
Hope this has helped. Good luck.

below goal
I can eat sweets in moderation. I can eat miniature candy bars just one doesn't bother me. I can eat two kisses. I can eat tootsie rolls. I can eat any kind of sweet just a few bites though. I can also drink milk. I can drink a small glass of milk and it doesn't bother me at all. But each person is different. I'm seven months out and can eat anything I want. I just choose not to eat those things but every once in awhile. If you deprive yourself then you will want it more. So if I want something I take a bite and I'm done for awhile.

Hey Girl,
If you want to know about cheaters , you asked the right person!!!!
I haven't done my diet to my doctor's likings I am sure but I have done the best I can,, again if I was perfect or could do it on my own I wouldn't of got the surgery right!!!
Well I am 3mths out and while I still can't eat anything sweet, I don't really crave it either,, every once and awhile I will want something and I have some choc milk, all sugar free of course, or some SF candy,, and that helps,, I had some sf desert at a resturant once and wow that sucked ,, It wasn't SF!!!! But as far as the sour cream and the crawfish bisque,, girl thats everyday for me!!!! Even if its just a bite I have it!!! It is rough at first but remember that first month when you can't eat hardly anything either,, train yourself then,, I wish someone would have told me that before,, Its then you should learn what to eat, what not to eat, the right portion size, or not right but what you should have now!! lol,,, Good Luck girl and trust me its not something you can't get through!!
I want to cry when I think about sweets. I prayed and prayed I'd hate the stuff and that chocolate would make me dump but I've discovered it doesn't. Now that I've started it's hard not to overindulge. My advice is, don't touch the stuff until you're at your goal. In this case, the unknown is better. If I hadn't of tried sugar, I wouldn't know that I wouldn't dump if I ate it. But, like Eve, I tasted and now want more, more, more!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to go into reverse before it's too late!

Thanks, Ashleigh! I'm looking forward to re-learning how to eat. I think that's what I need most at this point. What I've been told in the past about listening to my internal hunger cues is useless to me because my stomach, which I'm sure is stretched beyond recognition, starts growling not very long after meals. RNY is like a second chance with a new stomach to train, and I can go down my old path of overeating and chronic yo-yo dieting, but I've seen where that one leads and I don't want to go there!
Peggy, I'm so sorry to hear about your issues with sweets. Another member (was it Tina?) mentioned something about having to "detox" from sweets. Maybe that's the thing to do, though I wouldn't know how to do it myself.
Hi, I'm wanted to offer my insight to you. I'm 15 months post-op, currently living in Texas but wanted to get back to God's country , ASAP.
You will be able to have all of these things. In fact, I have an awesome Cheesecake recipe made with Splenda, you'll be surprised how many things you can do with Splenda and not really compromise the taste.
Sour cream and cream cheese are part of my plan and have been since about 6 months post-op, not a whole lot but some.
As for crawfish, I'm been eating them since a couple of weeks post-op (about 3 total then ), had them again this weekend and I can eat a fair amount, now not nearly what I ate pre-op but it is enough to be satisifed.
Please know that you will be able to eat MOST everything you eat now....just much smaller quantities and you'll need to focus on protein first. You'll learn to be creative, believe me.
Best wishes,
Dana
Thanks for the reassurance, Dana. I think I might, maybe, be able to live without sugar, but I must have my seafood! I had a peek at your profile and saw that you tried etoufee, so it's good to know that you were able to keep something like that down because I was also concerned about spicy and rich foods.
