Go with what you feel comfortable with.
I went witht he RNY because I wanted to lose the weight fast.  I am an impatient person and knew I would struggle with sticking to the diet of the Lap Band.  The RNY made me follow the rules!  lol
Now that I am at goal, I do have to watch what I eat, but it is so easy for me to do........after 21 months of following the wls diet, it comes almost naturally to me now.

Good luck in your journey!

Can anyone attend that did not have WLS at Pikeville?   Do you have a list of meeting dates and topics?

I live in Prestonsburg and had my RNY at KDMC but that is too far to drive for a support group.

Always check with your Dr. or NUT for your specific needs.
I used to keep a daily log on my profile.  If you go to my profile, go to June - July 2008 - that would have been my 4 month post op time!
Good luck to you!

Hello and great to see you on here!
I don't get on very often either.
Got to get back into the habit  of it.

The two surgeries both limit how much you can eat, but only RNY prevents the absorption of some of the calories that you consume.  The lap band doesn't cause any malabsorption.  With the lap band, you have to get fills done.  I didn't want to have to go to the doctor's office to do that periodically as I have a very busy schedule.  I have also heard that the probability of needing additional surgery is greater with the lap band than with RNY.  That's because the band can erode into your stomach, the stomach can flip over the band, the band can slip, etc.

As a self-pay patient, I felt that the RNY was more likely to get me to where I wanted to go and keep me there with minimal follow-up visits to the doctor being necessary.  I know many people who have done well with RNY, but I only know one person in real life who was able to lose all the weight she wanted with the band.  I know several people who have the band and aren't happy with it.

On the flip side, RNY is major surgery and requires that you stay in the hospital for at least a couple of days after you have it.  The lap band is usually done on an outpatient basis.  The malabsorption associated with RNY can cause health problems down the road, too.  You avoid that with the band.  Recovery is longer after RNY.

Good luck with your decision!

I would of thought that if Medicaid paid for the surgery, which they do, that they would also pay for the fills.

Hey everyone!

It's been awhile since I've visited OH. I am nearing my 4-month surgiversary and I am down about 60 pounds. I've spent the past six weeks or so being very sick. I was hospitalized for 11 days and they ended taking my gall bladder. Even so, I occassionally battle with some nausea. I've had three EGDs since my RNY.

Lately though, I've been feeling better. I hope to return to work next week. I am going to see my surgeon tomorrow for a belated 3-month checkup (I was in the hospital on my 3-month surgiversary). I am curious to see how much I weigh on his scale.

I sure hope everyone is doing well. It's been nice to catch up with everyone's progress and posts!
