did any of you all have Dr.Bolar????????
Hello Vickie. Dr. Bolar is the best in my opinion. I really liked him and his staff. Everyone was great with me. Read my profile, as well as he also has a forum on this site. I'm not sure if you've been into it yet but there is quite a bit of info there as well as links to his patients. I went to my first support group meeting last month at his office and met many people. I was really impressed with some of their stories, one lady in particular that had so many problems. She was telling us how he pretty much lived at the hospital while she was there.
As for what to take to the hospital, boy did I overpack. I used one outfit to wear home, and I did change into one of my own gowns the second day. With the help of the morphine I needed no entertainment (books, magazines), and had no desire to put on makeup or any of that. If your like me and don't live inside of Lexington take a cell phone if you have one.
As for food, I still have most of what I bought for after surgery. I went out and bought juices, crystal lite and jellos and such. I ate very little of any of it. One ounce at a time just don't add up to much. I recommend the sf popsicles though, that was one of my favorites because they were so cold. Jello, ugh, the thought of it gags me now. Oh, and make sure you have some juice of some kind. This may not apply to you but I would get really weak and my sugar would drop - and I'm not a full diabetic.
I used welches grape. Just get a few things to try for the first couple of days, then if you find you like something you can always send someone to get it for you.
Another tip, if your family friends likes to bring food in, tell them NO!!! When you are stuck on clear liquids you will not want tempting aromas floating around teasing you. Hence, no more jello!
Email me if you have any other questions or want to talk, I'll help in any way I can. I may not know the answers to some of it but between us maybe we can figure it out.
Good Luck and God Bless

Hi Vickie. I had Dr. Bolar. My surgery was 9/8/04. I did have some complications but Dr. Bolar was absolutely outstanding in taking care of me. He just did a hernia repair and scar tissue removal on me about 10 days ago. Again, he could not have done a better job. I went home the same day and am feeling great!
I really like Samaritan too. It's an older hospital but I've always had great nurses and staff people. My only complaint is their food (even the full liquid stuff) leaves a lot to be desired.
I took a small portable fan and it came in very handy as did a long handled wooden spoon. You wrap toilet paper around it and you are able to "take care of business" without calling the nurses! I didn't really read much, the anesthesia and meds made me very "spacy" (that's my story and I'm sticking to it
). To me, the best thing you can take to the hospital is someone to stay with you as much as possible. It just makes getting the little things so much easier. I jus****ched TV, slept and walked.
You will want to wear the hospital gowns in case you have any little bit of bleeding from the surgical sites. I just wore one open in the back and put another on open in the front. Covered everything okay. Non-slip slippers for walking. If you prefer, bring your own pillow. Put it in a very distinguishable pillowcase, so it doesn't disappear.
I got the food items listed on Dr. Bolar's list. I had a terrible time with the stuff like Gatorade. My sense of taste went berserk and I ended up eating a lot of ice chips. My first thick liquid was a little tomato soup and it was so good! Your tastes will change so don't stock up on too much of any one thing.
Good Luck!
