Please help!!!! My friend was raped several weeks ago and just found out she was pregnant. She is going to have an abortion several days before her gastric bypass surgery. I am really worried because she will not tell her surgeon because she is afraid she will have to cancel the surgery. When she has the abortion they will use a local anesthetic. Does anyone know if an abortion could cause any risks for the gastric bypass.
Tara,
I'm so sad to hear about your friend. What a horrible thing to happen and then to end up pregnant is more than any human should ever have to go through. You and your friend are in my prayers and I hope she can somehow come through this horrible ordeal.
As far as the bypass, there is no question in my mind that she must let the surgeon know. I really have no idea if it could cause complications, but the bottom line is that she must tell her doctor. She may very well be risking her life by not doing so. As embarrasing and hurtful as it might be, it's much better to know of possible complications and deal with those than to hide them. Let's assume the worse and that there could be complications with the anesthetic, etc., then I'm sure the bypass could be rescheduled. Please talk to your friend and help her to understand the importance of being totally honest with the surgeon about the abortion and the rape. Remember, this surgery goes way beyond the physical aspects and is very much mental. For this reason, the surgeon and psychologist who approved her surgery should be aware of everything.
This is just my opinion ... but I hope it helps.
My best always.
Charles
I am so sorry for your friend. But she absolutely MUST report this to her surgeon. Her very life could depend on it. Abortion is a medical procedure and a trauma to the body. It takes time for the body to recover. To give her the best possible chance for a successful and complication free surgery he will want her body in tip-top physical condition. Please help her to understand what is at stake here.
