1/31/05 Surgery Cancelled!!!

My Open RNY was scheduled to begin at 9 AM on 1/31/05. I checked in at admissions at 7:30 and went to preop to do all the interviews, requisite paperwork, tests, etc. I had gotten into "gown", booties and hat and they were about to "plug" me in to all the IVs, etc. The anesthesioligist came back with a bummed-out look on his face and told me my surgery was cancelled! They had an emergency, and that patient had to go to the ICU. They used my bed for the emergency, therefore there wasn't a bed for me after surgery. My surgery couldn't be done without an ICU bed available afterwards. They told me it would be rescheduled. As of today I don't have a new date! The whole situation is ironic, because at the time it was scheduled for 1/31 I told the family that I wouldn't believe it until I was on the way to the operating room. My daughter responded that I shouldn't believe it until I woke up in recovery. She was right! Even if they had put me under, if they hadn't started cutting it would have been cancelled! Can't be angry, it's only right the emergency patient got the bed, but this emotional roller coaster is stressful. Whine, whine, whine!

Richard, what a frustrating situation! Hopefully they'll understand how disappointed you were -and also how stressful it is to you -and give you the next available bed. Good luck and I hope all goes well. Sheila

Oh Richard!! What a bummer! But your are right the emergency comes first. I feel really bad because of the bowel prep you had already gone through! Blessings Tonya

Tonya, Am over it now, took a couple days! My Doc prefered I do three days of clear liquids rather than Golitely type prep. Clear liquid is a much better way for me. I have a new date, 2/25/05. My fingers are crossed. Thanks for your concern, Dick

That's sooooo disappointing. Argh. You seem to have such a great attitude though. Just stay calm and focused. Soon (hopefully) you'll get through this and will be a big "loser." (Funny, isn't it how happy we get to be called big losers?) Best wishes to you! -joanne s preop/current/goal 277/183/175 Loving my DS!

Hi Sheila, happy Monday! Quite a co-incidence that we'll both have our surgery the same day. From other of your posts I see you'll be at Norton's. I'll be at Veterans'. If all goes as scheduled mine will be at 9 AM. Will keep you in my prayers. Dick Coomes

Richard, yes I'll be at Norton Hospital. I've never been a patient there- or any other hospital in Louisville for that matter- but I've read and heard good things. I am scheduled to be there at 10:00 A.M. As I'm waiting on 10:00 A.M. to arrive that day I'll be saying a prayer for you since you'll already be in surgery. Good luck! 18 days and counting... Sheila
