TRUE OR NOT? LOSE ONLY 60% OF UR WEIGHT??
Hi all! I went to my surgeon today and withthe Lap gastric bypass--I was told u will only lose to 60% of your weight! Is this true? He did say with the procedure alone u will only lose 60% of the weight the other 40 % u have to really try hard. Now can anyone tell me what their experience with this has been and is this true? I am 100 overweight. Love to hear from anyone that has an answer... My surgery is scheduled for Jan 11th---I am really scared about it all..... Thanks to all who takes the time to reply to my posts....

Not true. I believe many people on the boards had lap gastric bypass and have had great success.
Al Rocher (?spelling) had his surgery laprascopic. He lost over 100 lbs.
You do have to committ to a lifestyle change. The surgery is just a tool to help you lose. Others will post their stories too.

From the research I've done, I think that 50-60% for RNY is more accurate. My surgeon Dr. Maguire offers the RNY and the DS. From the website at www.newlifesurgery.org:
"Success rate of weight loss: BPD/Duodenal switch is currently the most successful surgery for weight loss and maintenance of weight loss. The average weight loss is 70-% or more of excess weight and long term.
Success rate of weight loss: The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass has noted at least 80% of patients lose 50% or more of their excess weight and successfully maintain. Gastric bypass surgery does not eliminate the desire for food, but the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass makes it difficult and uncomfortable to overeat."
That's one of the reasons I chose the DS over the RNY. I wanted the best outcome possible. For more information on the DS here's a link on a discussion with good info.

I am 20 months RNY and have lost 100%!!! I actually have lost an additional 5 to boot!! It is a lifestyle change and I will have to watch what I eat for the rest of my life, but then again I was watching the first half of my life and I did'nt do such a good job with that part!!! So all in all I have alot better chance at it now! Just think postive and do everything the Dr. says to do and go to the support groups that is what keeps me going!!!! Good luck and happy New Year, this time next year you won't believe how far you have come!!! Robin
My doctor indicated that 60% is what you were pretty much guaranteed to lose with the RNY if you are simply compliant. If you continue to follow the program and increase your exercising, they said there is virtually no reason you cannot lose all the weight you want to. I have no intention of stopping at the 60% mark. I know that I can get the rest of it off and I have the determination to do it.

I don't think that's true. I agree with another of the people replied that is what they can safely guarntee that you'll lose. I've lose 239 lbs. I would like to lose the other 30lbs. But, I think it's safe to assume that I have lose more than 60%. I have not found anyone who attends the support group meeting who stopped at 60%. However, it does get harder after the first year. But, you have to work at it. And sometimes you just have to wait until your body catches up with you and is ready to lose again.
Good luck with your upcoming surgery. Let me know if I can be of any help by answering concerns or just lending an e-mail ear. Diane
