My doctor doesn't require any type of diet at all before surgery. He just said if I wanted to I could but It wasn't required. Did anybody else get told this?

Hey Kim...I just noticed this message I am replying to you again. At Georgetown we are always required to do a clear liquid diet 1 day before and then nothing after midnight the night before surgery. Of course they tell us to take our blood pressure or heart meds with a sip of water the morning of...I can't see why your doc would say its o.k. to eat..you don't want anything in your stomach going into surgery....Brenda in Lawrenceburg.

Did he mean no diet in the weeks before surgery or the two days before surgery. I didn't have to diet either for the weeks before surgery, because I was just over the 100 lbs the insurance company required . If I had been even a pound light I would not have been approved for the surgery. If you are a Lite-Weight ,as they are called ,you may not have to diet before surgery. Now the bowel prep, thats a different story. Thats really not a diet ,but a pre-op thingy

Kim, I am the same. No diet required except the day before and the day of surgery. I was just over the 100 pounds. However, I had been ill a couple of weeks before and just naturally lost a little weight. I wouldn't be concern. The main thing is to have an empty stomach and bowels before your surgery. Kris

Hi Kim. I think it all depends on the doctor. My doctor is requiring me to have the two week liver shrinking diet in order to make my lap surgery easier (I think the liver sits in front of the tummy, but I'm not sure.) Anyway, he has just started doing this with his patients recently and I will do anything to make the surgery go a little easier. (I'm a little over 100 pounds over weight.)

When I went for my pre-op appointment the atkins diet was recommended before surgery. It wasn't required, but highly recommended. I also had to do 1 day of clear liquids the day before surgery. Since my surgery they do not require the 1 day of clear liquids for lapbanders the day before surgery although it's still required for RNYers.

My docs didn't give me a specific diet, but I was told to do a low-carb-like diet to try to lose 10lbs before surgery to shrink the liver. It wasn't a stipulation of having the surgery though. In fact, the diet (and the bowel prep stuff) I had two days before surgery was probably what actually made me lose the 10lbs.
