I know this may be a silly question but how do you measure your grams of protein when you are eating meat? ( so many grams per oz.) Also do you just count the grams on the bottle for protein shakes or how do you do this? Please help I am hoping to have lap-band in a couple of weeks. I just love reading and participating in this forum.

Hey Regina, I think I met you at the surgeon's office this afternoon. I also use fitday.com. I used it everyday the first couple of weeks so I could keep an eye on what I was eating. It helped to see my calories, protein, carbs, etc. Congrats on the surgery date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a good rule of thumb I learned from my dietician is that a piece of meat the size of the palm of your hand (any kind) usually has about 20-25g protein. As others have suggested fitday is good but I am 18 months post op and mostly "eyeball" things now. You will also learn to do this as you get further post-op. The protein grams on the can of your shake or shake powder is what you count. it will say grams per serving. And if you are allowed to have milk, that adds another 8 grams of protein to your shake. doesn't matter if it's skim, low fat or regular. It is all 8 grams per 8 oz serving and makes your shake so much better. The one i use, I get from Susan Maria's site. It has 22g protein then I mix it with 8 oz. milk. Actually, I use Lactaid. So, I get 32g protein per shake and I always drink at least two per day. I have been below goal for a few months now with a hundred pound weight loss total.
