Tubal Ligation

Hi everyone. After reading the post on birth control pills, I've think I should just go ahead and have a tubal. I'm a 40 year old single mother and don't see anymore children in my future. My doctor doesn't want me on bcp's due to my weight and blood pressure, but recently found a pill I can take. I'm not worried about getting pregnant since I'm not in a relationship but I develop cysts on my ovaries if I don't take the pills. Since I'm beginning the process should I get a tubal before or after WLS? I was thinking before since I would have to go off the pill anyway. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Lynn, Good morning Well, I had a tubal ligation 5 yrs ago after my son was born...way before I even understood about WLS...my tubal was done laproscopically which was a bonus with me being able to have my WLS done lapro also. I think you might ask your surgeon what he thinks about it...should something happen it could hender your recovery process and make your WLS possibly open calling for a longer recovery time. Just my 2 cents Also remember that a tubal isn't 100% effective...I about fell out when my Dr. told me after the 2nd year there is a 1-200 chance of getting pregnant...I probably don't have sex 20x's a year (and I'm married), but still those odds are a little scary The other side is that maybe there is that one person out there for you, that you have yet to meet? You might want another child in a year or two?

Hi Lynn, Personally, if you're thinking about a tubal, I would get it before WLS. Tubals are usually done laparoscopically, but you may have a hard time finding an OB/GYN willing to do it with the scope after you've had WLS. Just my opinion, there is no scientific answer!
