Hi Debbie: I had the RNY, but from what I understand, which surgery is best depends on what type of eater you are. IF you tend to just eat one or two BIG meals a day, not a lot of sweets or snacking, then the lap band is an excellent choice. But, if you love sweets and tend to "graze" or snack all day long, in addition to eating large meals, then the RNY is probably the better choice for you. The lap band has fewer side effects and is a very very safe procedure. The RNY has side effects and has some risks involved. Your surgeon can help you determine which surgery is better for you....Be honest with yourself about your eating habits and that should help you decide. Hope that helps! Kat

When I was researching options, I read that RNY is 90% effective and lapband is 50%, meaning if you had 100 pounds to lose, you'd be likely to lose at least 90 with RNY and at least 50 with lapband. That's what made me go for the RNY...I wanted to lose 120 pounds and knew I would be satisfied with losing 96 but not with losing just 60. Now, take that with a grain of salt...statistics can be manipulated. Plus, I read it on the Internet, and even though it was a medical website, I know there is room for skepticism about things read online.
